Mark Insley's new Rustic Records album, "Supermodel," kicks off with a line that deserves to be on the short list of great opening lyrics on country records.

"The cops are in the parking lot / I'm much too drunk to drive," he sings as the band kicks in with a classic honky-tonk shuffle. And before you can down a shot of Jack Daniels and kick the jukebox, Insley croons the hook, "I'm just treading water at the deep end of the bar."

And so the mood is set for Insley's follow-up to his hit CD "Tucson," which reached No. 9 on the Americana charts, and stayed there for six weeks.

Insley, a former Ventura resident, will bring his wayward country vibe back to Ventura on May 22, when he plays Zoey's Cafe.

"We didn't really intend to make a honky-tonk record," he said. "We had no preconceived notions. We just cut the stuff live and it sort of just had that kind of vibe."
