"Daddy, Can I Have a War?"
Published May 15, 2003
Terence Trent D'Arby, who calls himself "Sananda" these days, has a groovy new anti-war song "Daddy, Can I Have a War?" up on his website for free download.
Now just by the title, I'm un-thrilled with the political content. The cheap Freudian "daddy" stuff must be about the lamest and most annoying line of political argument in discussing Iraq.
On the other hand, he made a fairly outstanding actually SONG. There's an actual tune here, and some decent basic hooks.
Moreover, he got some MOOD into this mess. It's more a brooding rock song than r&b, and the guitars do create some nice understated, throbbing menace.
And DAMN can that brother sing.
From his promotional email:
'DADDY CAN I HAVE A WAR?' and 'SHE KNOWS I'M LEAVING' were mastered in 'Nautilus' studio in Milano by Giovanni Versari. caution is advised if you are used to major label product for these are live, active, sonic bacterial cultures . It has not been re-mastered, re-recorded , re-mixed , re-edited or re-financed. It has also successfully avoided being picked apart by money managers, accountants and legal affairs personnel, which pretty much insures that the songs get to you as purely as inspired .
One more curious thing about this song: it was only written AFTER the war. According to his website and email, he only even wrote the song over Easter weekend.
