Dream with the Fishes

I met director Finn Taylor at the San Francisco Film Festival last year, but I still haven't seen either of his films. Cherish (with Liz Phair in a small role) was released last year and now his first film is out, so I'll have to catch up with them on DVD.

DVDFile: "Too touchy-feely for the art circuit and too tame for the midnight movie crowd, Dream with the Fishes was an intriguing throwback to the Hal Ashby, morality-be-damned fables of the late 1970s...the film isn't a lost masterwork, but its heart was in the right place...And here is a compliment that I don't dole out all that often - I don't know that I've seen anything else quite like it."

There are no extras on the DVD beyond a music video, but here is some background.

Amazingly, the original 1997 Dream with the Fishes website is still online.

IndieWire interview with Taylor and Fishes star David Arquette.

Another interview with Taylor about Fishes.

The blog Thenyoudiscover reported last year that Taylor's next movie, Chaos Theory, is based on the Darwin Awards (end of entry).

Taylor was the former literary director at the San Francisco's Intersection for the Arts (which is just down the street from me). It features a lit series, plays, music (including great jazz) and art.
