The Blood Brothers- Burn Piano Island, Burn
Published April 29, 2003
The Blood Brothers utilize two vocalists. The lead vocals, from Jordan Blilie, are fairly gender inspecific. From the name I would guess it's a guy, however, I've run into girls named Jordan, too. If it's a girl, she can scream with the best. If it's a guy, he's got the whole upper octave figured out. I tried checking their website, and it didn't help clarify any. In the picture on artistdirectrecords.com it looks like they're all guys. So I'll assume that (though, these days it is really hard to tell. Haha).
My ability to compare them to other bands is pretty poor because, while I have several fine examples (Anguish Unsaid, 90lb Wuss, and some Training For Utopia) you probably haven't heard any of them, thus rendering it pointless to offer comparissons. What I can say is that these songs are not for the faint at heart. The music is beautiful, but if you are not a fan of shouted lyrics you won't see the beauty. The lyrics are poetic, yet there is a reason for the Parental Advisory. With song titles like, "F***ing's Greatest Hits" and lyrics about 15 year old girls it's not something you'll find on your average soccer mom's favorite's list. Hardcore fans who only want breakdowns so they can mosh will be dissapointed. Punk fans who are only used to MxPx and Blink 182 will not understand this. This is for the few (and the proud) hard music fans who actually demand talent and creativity with music.
Now, there are a few faults with this cd. The previously mentioned leaning of the lyrics I tend to find a bit disturbing. "The Salesman Denver Max" is especially the one that comes to mind. Now, I realize that just because you write lyrics like this that doesn't mean they are autobiographical. That doesn't make it any less easy to listen to. The other main fault that I can find is in the vocals. The duo singing tends to fall into a simular harmony and groove in some songs. And the artwork is a big complaint of mine, too. Stop looking like a pansy emo group and get some tough artwork! Just about anything would be better than the "cut and paste" images.
But those complaints are relatively minor. The music still sparkles with a breath of fresh air in a dead genre.
peace.

Yeah, i could hear a bit selfmindead at times... but remember, You've listened to a 5 second clip... and I've heard the whole thing. Believe it or not you don't get the feel of a cd from just a little bit.
peace.
wow that's rare from a cd of that genre haha! I might have to listen more now
hey hey i loved it. really good shit....
I've been rather obsessed with the Blood Brothers for a few years now. Their social commentary in the form of surreal poetry is something they pull off beautifully. As for the review, I thought I'd help out with the band members. Johnny Whitney is the gender-bending-yet-male, more feminine squeal who can be heard spewing hooks while Jordan Billie is the deeper voice. As for anyone who hasn't listened to this album, please do. It's a real gem.

when I listened, The Refused and Selfmindead came to mind. Sorta that Swedish hardcore sound
