Party Starter: The Classics

How often does a compilation live up to its title? This one does. As a DJ on hiatus, this collection makes me very antsy to once again assume the throne.

A great funk and disco collection covering the mid '70s to the mid '80s, this one
will get you up and moving if you have a pulse. Chronologically covering the
transition from soul to funk to disco and back to funk, classics include Carl Carlton's original version of "Everlasting Love"; Peaches and Herb's funky disco command "Shake Your Groove Thing"; George Clinton's funk machine Parliament with "Flashlight," featuring some of the thwompingest bass ever from Bootsy Collins; the Commodore's airtight funk of "Brick House" (can that really be Lionel Richie on vocals? someone stole his groove after he went solo); the original version of "Love Rollercoaster," a horn funk classic by Dayton's Ohio Players; the hard '80s funk of Cameo's "Word Up," Rick James' "Super Freak" and the Dazz Band's "Let It Whip."

Also included are disco standards "Y.M.C.A." by the Village People, "Funkytown" by Lipps Inc., and "Last Dance" by Donna Summer. You could DJ half a party with this one CD. Yowsa - get down.
