The rescue of captured American Pfc. Jessica Lynch seemed a real and psychological turning point in the war: the unambiguously good news of the rescue itself, but also the reassuring, stirring good will and bravery of Iraqi lawyer "Mohammed," who risked his own life to aid an American. This at last was tangible proof that at least ONE Iraqi didn't hate us, understood our intentions, and was on our side.

Now an ex-Marine, Richard DeMarco of suburban Cleveland, has started an online petition drive to grant Mohammed, his wife and young daughter American citizenship:

An online petition to garner congressional sponsors of a bill to grant special U.S. citizenship to this brave man "Mohammed,"as well as his family, who at great risk to himself (and family) produced information which resulted in the rescue of one of our female P.O.W., Jessica Lynch.

DeMarco sees the move as not only appropriate, but instructive as well:

Aside from the obvious stated above, we feel it would send a powerful message to the Mideast and the world of what good comes to those who help U.S. Troops and citizens in danger.

AP reports:

As a refugee, Mohammed can come to the United States and apply for legal permanent residency within a year, then wait five years before applying for citizenship, Cleveland immigration lawyer David Leopold said.

DeMarco and the thousands who have signed his petition believe Mohammed and his family deserve more.

"This man went above and beyond," DeMarco said.

Sign the petition and help bring Mohammed and family here as full-fledged citizens - I did, they deserve it. Give the dude a medal, too.
