Calla- Televise: Arena Rock Recording 2002

Astral, the third track is another sonic dream. "Sit, Notice, I'm in silence" The lyrics are whispered to full effect. Listening to this piece brings to mind a late night on the couch, the lights out, something forgettable on the TV the remains of a bottle of wine on the coffee table and the sense of something lingering, a need for resolution (and even musically, the song seems to seek resolution, yet not quite attain it)
Customized, another outstanding track, is the most poetic song on this release; "Cruel intentions often are forgotten too; it's no use I know I've been there before. I feel you slipping through my hands euphoria, follow footsteps in the sand" Slightly disjointed but to good effect, Valle's whisperings again are the pin fastening a heart to a sleeve.
The best description I can think of to describe Televise would be the musical equivalent of watching an old home movie before the advent of camcorders. Things are moving sort of slow and dream like in front of you, you can hear the ticking/clicking of the film rotate through the projector as well as the faint electric buzz accompaniment. Your memory almost allows you to be back in the moment, yet there is that hovering sense of detachment that makes it almost surreal. Perhaps I am dating myself a tad for the truly young music lovers out there, but hey these things existed in the late 70's-early 80's (At least I, while young, was old enough to remember them fondly)
I really enjoyed this release and will certainly reach back into Calla's catalog the next chance I have to binge on cds. If you enjoy space rock or drone pop I'd especially give this cd a spin, or at least check out some of the tasty authorized mpfrees here.

this is an excellent album. the new one, 'collisions' is good too, although it takes some getting used to as they've evolved yet again. here's my blog post on their record release show:
