The Friday Morning Listen

For some time now, I've had this little ritual. On Friday mornings I attach special significance to the first cd that I play. Don't know why. It seems like a mini-commentary (in my head) on how things are going for me. Maybe it's that I'm psyched to be at the end of a good week..the end of a bad one..or the start of a (hopefully) good weekend. This has never been completely clear to me. So a while back I started posting these selections on my website as "The Friday Morning Listen".
Maybe at some point in the future I can make sense of it...
So this week's Friday Morning Listen:
Evolve - Ani Difranco
Probably her "jazziest" recording yet. I don't think her band can get any tighter.

We have something nebulously in common. I have, over the years, evolved a sort of calendar of music. There are certain CDs or bands that I only listen to at certain times of the year. Some are obviously seasonal - Providence, RI's Holy Cow is the ultimate Halloween music, and Vivaldi is the obvious choice for marking solstices and equinoxes, but some others... some others either from long habit or for that unfathomable but undeniable feeling of "rightness" get played only in the spring, say (King's X's eponymous album was the soundtrack of my desperate rush to finish my senior thesis in college, and so it is the soundtrack of April and May forevermore), or in July, the month of road trips (Led Zeppelin). November is for Radiohead, and early winter is all about Ween.
I've often wondered if anyone else does this.
i did at one time attempt to maintain a journal of everything that i listened to.
ended up being way too hard to keep up.
but it would have been fun to look at some years down the road to find out how many guilty pleasure listens i indulged in ("...what the hell was i doing listening to Journey?!!")
