A Debate on American Power

On Saturday night the Wiltern Theater hosted "A Debate on American Power and the Crisis Over Iraq," with war advocates Christopher Hitchens and Michael Ignatieff squaring off against war opponents Mark Danner and Robert Scheer.

Jaws dropped as Hitchens and Ignatieff struggled vainly to assemble their multiple trains of thought into a coherent argument, and Danner and Scheer easily eviscerated them by laying out simple facts. People left the debate shell-shocked. We're going to war, and proponents of it don't even know why? No doubt many former fence-straddlers attending the debate will soon be seen marching with anti-war signs.

Photos and commentary are here.

I wrote a preview of an earlier debate between Hitchens and Danner which is online in realvideo and realaudio.

And Salon covered it.

Tonight (Monday, March 17th) Danner will be on a panel along with Strobe Talbott
at UC Berkeley on War, the Press, & US Power: Diplomacy & Conflict in the Post-9/11 World.
