Toy Story 2
Published March 13, 2003
It's rare when a film sequel outdoes its original. And Toy Story 2 didn't need to up the ante on animated-movie charm. The first Toy Story, released in 1995, was buoyed by eye-popping computer animation and winning, credible voice performances by Tom Hanks, Tim Allen, Don Rickles, and others. But with the sequel, now available on DVD and video, the animation wizards at Pixar Studios have outdone themselves. Toy Story 2 centers around the "kidnapping" of cowboy doll Woody by slimy toy-store tycoon Lazy Al, and the efforts of space ranger Buzz Lightyear (there are more than one Buzz, in fact), Mr. Potato Head, Rex the dinosaur, and Co. to rescue him. The plot of this action-packed film is inventive and engaging (if perhaps too intricate for wee ones, but my wee one was delighted anyway), and the patented Pixar animation seems flawless (except for an annoying tendency to appear blurry at times). Hanks, Allen, and other holdovers from the first film continue to shine, and guest performances by "Seinfeld"'s Wayne "Newman" Knight, "Frasier"'s Kelsey Grammer, and Joan Cusack (as--finally--a female toy worth rooting for) make us want to see the Toy Story series continue through infinity and beyond.
