A Viking of a gig!

Live in Midgard
Therion
Nuclear Blast

Therion are an acquired taste to be sure. However, if you like your metal operatic and symphonic then this is the band for you. The band is simply amazing, even capable of making Abba's 'Summernight City' sound both heavy and very symphonic. On this CD you get 24 songs from their impressive career. Songs were recorded during two dates, one a stadium gig and one a club setting. The band wanted the listener to get the true feeling of their tour. If you like Therion (or symphonic metal) this is absolutely essential for your collection. If you think that all metal is 4 musicians playing as fast as they can and a singer grunting then give this a try. This lot are truly amazing and like Opeth, get better with each album. Therion have managed to produce one of the best live albums certainly in a long time, maybe even ever.

Marty Dodge: 5/5

Are the vocals 'death puke' style, or do they sing properly?

Therion's first couple of albums were straight up death metal. Then they dropped the death vocals and started using clean vocals instead. Last I heard they were using a chorus instead of a lead singer. However, I haven't gotten their latest album yet, so I don't know if that's changed.

that sounds pretty cool. i'm into the operatic/symphonic metal (ala Saviour Machine or Virgin Black... both highly recomended) so I may have to give this a try sometime.

peace.

Sounds like it's worth picking up. I love the instrumental complexity of bands like Opeth, but I can't stand the grunting vocal style they use.

I wonder if some bands abandon the 'death' style of vocals after the first couple of albums, because otherwise the singer will ruin his voice.

They still play some old death metal tracks live, as can bea heard on the live CD, but to 99% they're using various opera singers, choir and some metal singers like Hansi from BLIND GUARDIAN.
Their best albums are usually said to be THELI, VOVIN and SECRET OF THE RUNES, but personally I find DEGGIAL to be one of their best albums.
On the other hand, once you get into this band, you want to owe all their albums.
