Stylus Profile-Us: DJ CINCO P8 (San Diego)
Published February 20, 2003
- voila. do you prefer to record, or to perform?
DJ CINCO P8: I like both. I haven't done a whole lot of recording, but I have found that the gratification of performing is huge. You essentially borrow all of these bodies for a time and make them move. They are at your mercy. It isn't a power trip, it's just that you can take people places. I've been taken to places, lead around by some of my favorite DJ's--they are usually great, memorable experiences no matter how inebriated I might have been ;).
- nice. how did you learn to use your gear? learning curve? trainspotting other DJs?
DJ CINCO P8: I thought that DJing was something that I would always do. I guess I realized this after watching the movie "Beat Street" and watching my sister dance in school performances, breaking and all of that. I used to break, I was never much of a graf artist... I don't rap too well but I've always liked making mix tapes. I would spend hours every weekend making mix tapes. Finding what song went well with the next.
I would record mix shows off of the radio and then I would find a song I liked and record it by itself, and then I would put it on one of my mixes. My sisters did this shit so that's where I learned it. We were too damn poor to buy tapes or records, so we had to do it off of the radio. We were music fiends, with an insatiable appetite. As far as using my gear, I was self-taught, I've never really hung out with other DJ's to get tips and all of that. I find that kinda weird, but hey....
- where are you from?
DJ CINCO P8: I'm from Hollywooooood (CA, not FLA!).
- where've you been spinnin'?
DJ CINCO P8: Shoot... I really haven't done much in the way of gigs. Mostly house parties. I like house parties. I've done a couple of nights at the Monkey Club in SF but that's about it. Oh and I was in a Distinguished Gentlemen video back in 93.
- who are some of your influences (or what)?
DJ CINCO P8: My brother and my family have been HUGE influences in my appreciation of music. Nobody really performed, they were just fans. Women are also a favorite influence. Cities influence me a great deal too.
