My Big Fat Greek Wedding

Ok, I'm about to run out of movies that I've already seen, but I've got new ones about to show up from NetFlix tomorrow, so no worries. But one of the movies I've already seen is
My Big Fat Greek Wedding
.

I laughed, I didn't cry, but I did laugh some more. This was a cute movie. If that sounds like damning with faint praise, it is. Those who criticized the movie as just one long sitcom were right; in fact, it will be a sitcom next season. Those who said it could have been about any ethnic group at all were also right, but that's really not important. It was about a Greek family because the writer is Greek, and that's really all I need to know. It didn't have to be filmed in Greek, or have a masked chorus singing narration, and it didn't have to be impenetrable to the average viewer. In short, it could be called My Big Fat Greek Wedding without worrying about whether it was Greek enough.

Will it win? Probably. It made so much money for so little that it has to win something, and it's only nominated for Best Original Screenplay. In that category it's up against two Spanish language films, a movie no one saw, and Gangs of New York which will probably win Best Picture or Best Director or both. Not exactly stiff competition.
