Own a label? Interested in starting one? Maybe you're just interested in how indies operate - if so, check out this program in LA on the 26th:

The National Association of Record Industry Professionals presents:

    "INDEPENDENTS' DAY:
Indy Labels Charting A New Standard For Success"

Managing independent labels to stability and commercial success will be the subject of NARIP's February 26th program. We will discuss proven strategies in advancing an independent label's development, including strategic planning, finance, domestic and international marketing and distribution, creating sales demand for records, touring, merchandising and ancillary markets, branding, product cross-promotion, Internet presence and deal-making. We will also address various challenges facing independent labels, including A&R, branch distribution, radio and retail, and building into a recognized national and international trademark / brand.

Please join us for our panel discussion with special guest speakers:

JOE ESCALANTE, President, Kung Fu Records
GREGG LATTERMAN, President, Aware Records (subject to availability)
    RICHARD REINES, President, Drive-Thru Records
TOM OSBORN, General Manager of iMUSIC / ARTISTdirect
ALAN BECK, President, ITP Records & Pacific Concert Group
TESS TAYLOR, Moderator and President, National Association of Record Industry Professionals

    Other speakers TBA

    WHEN:
    Wednesday, February 26th, 2003
    6:30 p.m. Cocktails
    7:30 p.m. Panel discussion

    WHERE:
    Platinum Live
    11345 Ventura Blvd.
    Studio City, CA 91604

That's a pretty good, if pretty heavily punk-leaning gathering of indie minds.

What is NARIP?

The National Association of Record Industry Professionals (NARIP) promotes continued education, career advancement and collegiality among record executives. With an emphasis on becoming better informed and more effective executives, NARIP offers professional development opportunities, educational programs and seminars, the opportunity to meet and interact with peers, a job bank, a member resume database for employers, a mentor network, a newsletter and other services.

NARIP was created specifically for - and is restricted to - record industry professionals. To qualify for membership, you must work at a major or independent label, record distributor, record marketing or personal management firm. Lawyers, publicists and consultants whose main client base is the record business are also welcome.

Career media professional Eric Olsen is honored to be the founder and publisher of Blogcritics.org, which, quite frankly, rules - as do his wife and four children.
