So you don't want to spend the money or go through the learning curve to master music creation software like Acid or Cool Edit, but you would still like to dabble in the fun of creating your own mix tracks and get jiggy and whatnot.

Bacardi DJ Sound Studio has a very tasty, easy to use web-based mixer with seven tracks and 200 samples you can use to put your own tracks together - a great way to see if your are interested enough to move up to more sophisticated software. Probably the most important aspect of the digital revolution is that now we can all be artists.
