Sixpence None The Richer- Divine Discontent
Published February 15, 2003
It's hard for a band to recover from a certain image. Sixpence None The Richer, for better or for worse, got the image as shallow pop icons for thier "played a dime a minute" song, Kiss Me(from the cd Self Titled). What was ironic about that, is that Kiss Me was the exception for Sixpence, and not the rule. Where Kiss Me was light and airheaded, the rest of that cd was full of complex songs with dark poetry and dark music.
Then, to make matters worse, thier label had trouble. So instead of a release a year or two after the Kiss Me phenomonon, 5 years pass and thier name has been all but forgotten.
First listening to this cd was an adventure. My first hope was that it wouldn't be chock full of "made for radio" Kiss Me's. After listening to it, it's not. However, it's also not quite the dark trip that thier self titled cd was. Well constructed pop songs that are soul lifters.
My only complaint about this cd is that there isn't quite enough varriance in sound through the cd to hold my interest. A good investment for Sixpence None the Richer fans. A great alternative for any other pop out there. And, if whittled down to an EP, with just the best songs, would be great.
peace.
