If a mortal would point out that life
That on earth could be nearest to heaven,
Let him, thanking his stars, chuse a wife
To whom truth and honour are given.

But honour and truth are so rare
And horns, when they're cutting, so tingle
That with all my respect to the fair,
I'd advise him to sigh and live single.

It appears from these premises plain
That wisdom is nothing but folly,
That pleasure's a term that means pain
And that joy is your true melancholy.

That all those who laugh ought to cry,
That 'tis fine frisk and fun to be grieving,
And that, since we must all of us die,
We should taste no enjoyment while living.

Cowboy Nation: We Do as We Please

Heh. Bought that one just for the title. Music's pretty good, too, especially the title song:

Cowboy, cowboy nation
Get on your pony and ride.
Put another log on the fire,
Try to keep the weather outside.
You know that trouble's going to find you,
No matter how well you hide.

How long's it been since you've seen the sun go down?
How long's it been since you moved into this dirty old town?
You got the best of the deal when you laid your pistols down.

Cowboy, cowboy nation,
Saddle up your pony again,
You've been peeking out the curtains,
And that's when the roof fell in.
Lock your rifle on your saddle,
Ride to the river's end.

In the parties of the heaths [not sure about that lyric - ed.]
They're waiting for you to die
Get down ,get down,
You cowboy man they cried.
When they settle on a sinner
And they want to do him in
You saddle up your pony again.

Cowboy, cowboy nation,
Get on your pony and ride,
Put another log on the fire,
Try to keep the weather outside.
You know that trouble's going to find you
No matter how hard you ride.

Everybody's wondering why
You've been gone so long,
You were sucking on a bottle
And crying to a hillbilly's song.
Take the mint outta your mouth,
And the ring outta your ear,
You're wanted on a new frontier.

Cowboy, cowboy nation,
Get on your pony and ride
Put another log on the fire,
Try to keep the weather outside
Trouble's coming up behind you,
No matter how well you ride.
