Switchfoot- The Beautiful Letdown
Published February 14, 2003
People who follow the underground music scene are usually resigned to the realization that the good bands don't get big. Or, a band will put out several solid releases, get signed to a major label, and then thier cds become crap. The exceptions to the rule a few and far between, sadly.
The above is especially true in Christian music. For the few bands with actual talent, very few will get a voice in the mainstream market. A few Christian bands have gotten limited or great success in the mainstream, Jars of Clay, Sixpence None the Richer, Blindside, and of course POD, however, they are the exception instead of the rule.
Nestled on the little Re:Think label (a branch off of Sparrow Records) sat Switchfoot. They quietly release one shakey debut titled "The Legend of Chin" then fire off 2 solid releases. Most people didn't pay attention.
Then success came in almost instantaneous fashion. Mandy Moore, star of A Walk to Remember and pop singer, was a fan an gave them a chance to contribute music for A Walk to Remember. Four songs ended up on the soundtrack. A Walk to Remember became a big hit.
So now expectations run wild for Switchfoot's new release (set for Febuary 25th). If you are already familiar with Switchfoot, these songs are not a great departure from thier established sound. They are tight and play thier instruments well. Each song is very solid. The standout tracks are breathtaking. The songs seem to either completely rock out or are intentionally soft ballads.
Being released on both Sparrow Records to the Christian market and Columbia Records for the general market, it should have a chance to be given the attention it deserves.
peace.

I have both New Way to Be Human (excellent CD) and Learning to Breathe (solid, though it doesn't stand out quite as much). Saw Switchfoot in concert last summer. Good band, good music. Thanks for the heads up on the new disc.

Switchfoot rocks! I'm seeing them next Friday night in Hollywood.
