Music Review: House of Heroes - What You Want Is Now

Written by Jeff Petermann

House of Heroes, a recording artist off of Vanishing Point Records, would be a great Weezer cover band; however, as a unique band, they fail miserably with their release, What You Want Is Now.

The album starts off great, with passionate vocals, great guitars and decent drumming. Then, track 2 hits and it's the same as the first song. In fact each track on the disc is a cut and paste version of the first song. Not good, folks. As much money as CDs are nowadays, people want good music that is different and aesthetic. This disc is a letdown and a miserable failure on all fronts.

I didn't know I released this album....

I am confused, the Amazon link says Acts 26 - Jeff, why did you mention Future Destination? Matt doesn't seem to know anything about it....

OK, so here is the scoop. I got a bunch of CD's in from another person from our website who decided not to review them (long story) The problem was, this album was a pre-release(I guess--it looked more like a CD-R), ands the others did not have booklets or cases so I was flying blind on bad information. My apologies for any confusion, and please rest assured, I won't be doing any more reviews, no matter who tells me the info, unless I verify the info first( I am a journalism major and I would get my butt reamed by my dean if he saw this=)

Thanks Jeff, I'm sure Matt will be satisfied.

Actually, this band is on Vanishing Point Records (www.vanishingpointrecords.com).

Ok this is to go to Jeff Petermann?? I read your review of house of heroes? are you actually serious??? do you even know what good music is?? obviously you dont listen to weezer a lot because they dont even sound like them...i laughed when i read your review actually cuz if you knew good music you would be all over them...they are incredible and many other bands, artists, and record labels agree-i recommend you listen to it again-really listen to it...their songs are each completely different...why would you even say that? did you actually listen to it?? also this cd was the complete opposite of a failure...they have sold out in stores everywhere and have been called constantly by record labels everywhere....that was the most ridiculous review...i think you need to expose your music knowledge a little more past creed and nickelback-there is such thing as good music ya know-you just dont know what it is

Ya jeff i'm gonna agree with anne. knowing what you said about house of heroes has confirmed to me that you are not a good judge of quality music. house of heroes would be the opposite of how you described them. there is NO way you listened to that cd entirely if you think every song sounds the same! it's too bad you don't recognize the talent they have. house of heroes rocks,on cd and live-it hurts to think that you think this cd is a failure and it's funny that you think every song is like the first. you are so off that i can't even begin to respect your opinion.

Anne and Shelby,
I am glad to have inspired such vehement conversation. I have been in the scene for over 8 years and I hate creed and nickleback. In fact, I would have given Creed and Nickleback even worse reviews than I gave House of Heroes. I respect your opposing views, but lets not make this personal,k? If you put House of Heroes up to the bands that their label owner has compared them to--Jimmy Eat World for instance--they are pathetic. In their own right as a rock band--they are not original or unique. But, alas, I am defending my review--I will instead, stand by it and say to both of you--get exposed to some good bands in this genre. For a list of those bands--email me.

jeff-how bout those "good bands" you were talking about to anne and shelby-i'd like to hear what you think good music is if you dont like HOH...i am agreeing with both of them-i dont respect your opinion and i think its sad youve been in this business for 8 years-its kinda funny actually-get exposed my friend-dont forget to list those "good" bands

#10 — March 26, 2003 @ 16:47PM — Jeff Petermann

Good bands...let me see...before I list bands that I consider good, I first want to say that I have not made any of my comments personal...and yet...you all feel the need to do so. OK, on to bands I think are good...
Bands that I have reviewed (why not take a look around the site and find my link...you will find these reviews)
1. Roy G Biv "Perspectives in Perspective"
2. Brazil
3. Jets to Brazil
4. Killswitch Engage
5.Vaux
6.Coronet Blue
7. Shadow's Fall
8. Atreyu
9. Brandtson
10. I could go on...what's the point?
I am not going to list all of them...if you really want to know check out all of the websites that I write for. I will say that I am mainly a hardcore fan and a metal fan, but when a talented emo/post punk/hardcore band comes my way, I take notice--HOH was not talented. End of story.

define talent jeff-it looks as though anne, shelby and now jules have told you that your reviews and opinions are not respectable so why would they bother to check out your other websites-doesnt seem to make sense.i fail to respect your opinion as well.i have heard house of heroes live and have listened to their cd. they dont match up to what you have said about them..im a little confused as to where you got the whole thing about weezer..wow that really made me laugh.i wouldnt say HOH is the best band ive heard-they lack in some areas but as far as talent-they definitely have it.i recommend listening to the cd in entirety and perhaps see them live-it might change your views-just a thought.

#12 — March 31, 2003 @ 13:05PM — Jeff Petermann

Well, Mark. I made reference to my other sites becaude the ladies above wanted to see what I thought was good. I have reviewed bands that are good and I wanted to give them the oppurtunity to see those reviews. As far as listenting to the whole album--and as far as seeing them live:
1. I did listent to the album in its entirety. I stand by my review.
2. A bands live perfomance has nothing to do with the talent displayed in a recorded effort. I can do alot live that I can't do on an album and vice versa. maybe, if you like House of heroes so much, you should write a review of the album and tell me what i missed.

found this thread 5 years later. Hopefully this guy doesn't write reviews anymore. House of Heroes is one of the most under rated bands around. Their last three CD's have shoved this guys review right back in his face. They are one of the most creative and progressive Christian band's in the market these days
