Chances are that AL is spending money out her wazoo because she is bringing *in* money... If she'd take a moment to stop and think and realize that a year down the road no one will think twice about her, she could save, like, a lot of money and could live on that for a while...

This is an important point: so many artists who snag a hit and a (temporary) windfall are completely unprepared for it and don't save. Then when the windfall dries up they are left with little or nothing but debt and regret ("Made enough money to buy Miami but i pissed it away so fast.."). It's just as important to have it together on the business end as on the artistic end, buddies.

Chances are AL isn't even seeing real money, just skimmed cash-flow, too many examples to count, but Backstreet Boys, Samantha Fox, Wham! (part of their contract counted 12" singles as free-goods) come immediately to mind.

I saw an interview with a financial planner for rappers, where her biggest problem was preventing them from bling-blinging with cash they didn't have from their advance.

Plus of course all those videos, expenses and everything has to be recouped.

Avril Lavigne is amazing Live. She has an incredible stage presence and CAN sing. Maybe she didnt perform well on TOTP in the UK or CD:UK, but at her concert In Brixton Academy London, she was an amazing singer, she spoke to the crowd, let to fans on stage to sing complicated with her. I think she's being underrated at the moment, and she can go on to great things, especially looking forward to hre next album.

First of all...Brian, you mentioned that her songwriting skills were adept for being all of 17 years old. The problem with that however is the fact that her songs are not of her own composition. If you read any music news i'm sure you've heard of the little newsbit stating that most of her songs were in fact written, at least in part, by a group of studio-hired song-writers. I don't think her music is anything too horrible though. Compared to much of what we see on the pop charts today she's freakin' genious. I'm not saying I like her, I just wouldn't go out of my way to put her down. It could always be worse....

She at least represents the appearance of "integrity" - maybe she will become what she pretends to be.

I went to see Avril once. I wanted to see (and hear) for myself what she sounded like live. I thought she was terrible. It makes you wonder what they do to her voice for her Cd's. I think it needn't be discussed whether or not Miss Lavigne is punk. If one has ever heard a real punk song, one will realize that AL is not punk. Just because you don't try so hard to be different (inevitably achieving the opposite result), it doesn't mean you're not. 1) Clothes and what you were don't make you punk, but in the music industry, image is EVERYthing. What you see is what you get and they are very aware of this. I'm given to understand that about 50% of the people on American Idol can sing. Decent, good, even awesome singing isn't that isolated a talent. Few "singers" last because there's so many people who can match or even top their "talent."

Thus, the pop star: a semi-talented singer with a carefully groomed image and performance coaches. Watch me dress up and shake my booty! It really doesn't make a difference what costume I'm wearing or whether my booty is shaking on a pole or on a skateboard.

Oh, Avril isn't going to be a one-hit wonder, that's obvious. But real divas with virtuoso voices don't last long in the pop world (just look at Tina Turner or that other lady--you know, the one with that awful "Glitter" movie?). Her "career" will go down the pot--and as she is in no way a "musician," and has no ability to write, compose, or play, it is worth wondering where she will end up. Hopefully not in AA.

It's no crime not to be a musician, few people are. Many can sing, but few have the talent and creativity necessary to make music a true career. That's ok: the record companies can and will use these singers to make a few billion and pad their pockets for a decade or so. If Avril is smart, she won't let the executives jerk her around and she'll build herself a nest-egg.

Yesterday I went to an avril lavigne concert where she presented under my skin. Honesty she sang very well and I love her songs but I think she wasn't kind with spanish people. She didn't sign anything, during the concert she didn't say anything and when she sang complicated unlike other countries; she didn't choose people so as to sing with her.Besides when she finished she only said "gracias" thank you and everybody thought that she was having a rest. We waited for 15 min. but she has gone!!!and of course she came 3 quarter of hour late. Just bought the album, I think she definately has something, there is a bit of Cranberries, Ray wilson (Stiltskin, Cut) plagiarism-ish - but also a fair amount of original. Ugh, when you little kids put your email addresses in here, it makes lots of extra work for the site editors to take them out.

Is it just me, or does anybody else find it strange how Avril seriously "underuses" the small arrray of instruments she claims to know how to play. This was so obvious when I saw her in concert recently - more so - the fact that they used all sorts of lighting and technical effects to cover up Avril's gross inadequacy as a (supposed) instrumentalist. This makes me mad as I myself am a practising musician who has studied music history and theory for a long time. To see how the industry types can conceal someone like Avril's gross lack of natural talent (flat notes/off pitch and rhythm included) - and sway the masses in the process, just gets on my nerves incredibly! Not only that, a lot of credit is *not* given to the band and technicians for doing all the cover-up work, so that audiences can be well-tricked into believing Lavigne is authentic, and even revolutionary in the pop(/rock) world. No wonder Eban Tauberfeld left (a wise move) and Green Day prohibited her from joining them live on stage recently.

What has happened to artistic credibility?

I'm no Avril fan, but it's funny in retrospect because she's like the top-selling rock act in the country (sad as that is to say) or close to it and worth a gazillion dollars.

All record companies know that the only growth market in rock now is fake mall rawk music like Avril and the "new," made-over Kelly Clarkson that pre-teens will buy. 13 year old girls are the ones with disposable income who will buy the CDs and all the products associated with the music (the clothes, the shoes, the makeup, the cell phones, etc.)

Oh how rock and literacy together has fallen. So many points to make...so little time. First off I would like to state this, I am fourteen years old and never in my life will I buy any of Avril's CDs.

Topic 1: I may be fourteen, but I have been writing since I was eight and never in my life have I done any of the "chat talks" as so many of you people seem fond of. It is a slaughter of the english language and writing altogether. So please, STOP IT!

Topic 2: Avril is absolutely not punk. She is not rock. She is not alternative. She is a teenage girl who got lucky enough to be seen as a good chance for more money by the music industry. Many have more talent than her and haven't been discovered or underrate themselves so they don't try to. I have seen it happen so many times. The sad fact that now we have Avril Lavigne, Ashlee Simpson, and Hilary Duff representing the "Women of Punk" makes me want to cry.

Topic 3: Avril is trying something that will keep this arguement about "Is she punk?" "Is she pop?" going for ages. She is purely making music for adolescent girls about "heartbreak" and being a "rebel". Now she is trying to get the more adult teenagers with the same stuff. Face it, it's not going to work. More mature teenagers see that she isn't punk or rock, or whatever the hell the arguement is about, while adolescents are fighting back and saying she is. Points vary. But, she will not get the 14/15/16 and up audience if she continues to rip off the classics. I was horrified when she was at the Metallica Tribute and sung. I was SAD when Korn sung and weren't that good. Face it, no one can do someone else's song. Not even Evanescence can do that and I hold respect for that band. (Oh that horrible cover of Thoughtless by Korn and Heart-Shaped Box by Nirvana). Avril needs to stick to the young audience, plain and simple.

Point 4: My outfit does consist of mostly black. Not because I think I'm "rock" or because "it makes you cool". Black is a symbolic color for me meaning courage. Yet, some of the CD's I have you never would have guessed. Naming two: the Phantom of the Opera Soundtrack and DJ Jinnai. Musicals and Japanese remixes. So apparently, you can never really judge a person by their looks. (And I compliment the person who mentioned Sarah Brightman. Bravo.)

Point 5: Comments about Avril's voice. I am a nine year choir veteran. I have been in choir since I was five and believe me, 3/4ths of my choir class can sing higher than Avril Lavigne, including the guys. Even the first years can sing higher than her without even practice or warming up. About her concert performances...I was subjected to torture whenever I had to watch over my cousin and she was watching an Avril DVD...If I thought her singles were bad, I wanted to cut off my own ears and gouge out my eyes with the concert DVD. Jumping around, playing the guitar, yelling, does not make you a rocker. It just makes you not able to sing to a good level. Evanescence's Anywhere But Home DVD is one of those "okay" performances. Maybe if she wasn't moving so much and cutting down her oxygen supplies, Amy Lee would be able to sing at top level. But she was still able to hit a long string of high notes in one breath perfectly. Avril apparently must have had a lot of voice editing done in the studio to get her voice sounding "decent".

Last comments: To all those who keep asking for her damn e-mail address, read this whole damn thing. You can find about every single e-mail adress she could have just by looking at past posts. To the person who said that if Avril ever made a book he would buy it: if that happened, I would murder the company that published it. Besides, what could she write about? She doesn't even write her own songs...And last, please, try to think clearly about this subject. How many bands that were here in the 90's that had prominant futures and careers, in about four or five years, are still around? Not many, huh? So there is very little chance that Avril will survive. Avril lavigne is the greatest singer ever!!! I went to one of her concerts, and it was the best concert I have ever been to!!!! I have her mailing address, but I most DEFINITELY WONT give it away....I have not sent her anything yet, but I have already put a letter in the mail, and I asked her to reply to me!!! If I get a reply I wil tell everyone, but I still cant give away her mailing address... but Avril Lavigne is so pretty, and even though I am taller than her already by 6 inches, she is still my rome-model, and the coolest person ever!!!! And no, I don't think she would care if she saw this because there are so many of them. As for the letters, I'm wondering if all of you know that e-mails are pretty much automated and they try to compensate for this by sometimes sending a picture. Same for letters. Artists don't have time to reply to every single one. Those that do get a personalized letter just happen to be lucky enough to be eycatching enough at the right time or the artist was just bored and decided to pick a random one.

There is still much to be said about Avril's live "singing".

Look u guys. I think the things you have said about Avril are pretty harsh. I mean, she is my fav artist and she has done well for a young girl in a world against so many other artists. Its ok for you to say she cant sing. But lets try and see you do it better. I have seen her live and she has such an amazing voice, and can definatly sing. I just wish i had the talent she does. She can play instuments. She can play the guitar, and even played the piano on stage. So as for 'no-one thinking twice about her' i think there are alot of people that do. I see lots of people asking for Avril's email address. I doubt anyone would publish THAT online, but if you want any chance of getting YOUR email address to Avril, you could visit La Pizzeria in Napanee where they have a large guest book that's delivered directly to Avril every few months or so (I interviewed the owner - Avril's "Pizza Boi" - for my website blog a little while ago). :)

I don't know for sure, but if you wrote a REALLY great comment in her guest book, along with your email address, MAYBE she would write you back... anything's possible. :)

Plus you can try a slice of her favorite Pizza while you're there. lol
