Everyone here is stereotyping emo. Emo stands for emotional. It doesn't mean they cut. That's a "cutter" not an emo. Cutter is an attribute that people take up to release their pain in a selfdestructive way. It doesn't mean they want to die. Emo's aren't "Whiney people who want to die because their life sucks". They are normal people, who like a certain fashion, taking up attributes that others do and hang out with those people. I'm not emo but I don't hate them. emo is not about being depressed - probably about less than 1% of depressed people are emo. Emo is about revelling in being depressed and taking the depression and making it part of your style and your whole life - when i am depressed i want to overcome it and be happy - the emo craze is just deluding kids into thinking that being like this is somehow cool and an ok way to live, its just a shame. im all for freedom of expression, but i dont think make-up and self harming is really a great way of doing this.

ok, so being an emo myself, there are two types of emos. ...the real emos and the kids who pretend because they think its "cool." the ones who think its cool only do it for attenetion or because they like the clothing style, and diss on the real ones. Actually, I believe EMO started as a sub catagory of Hardcore. Bands like Ten Yard Fight, Boy Sets Fire, etc.. Though they may have changed their sound to stay with the times they originally copied the hardcore sound, mainly the StraightEdge style, but with lyrics about alienation,lost love and so on.

Just like the hardcore scene back in the 90's copied the Death Metal sound but with a lack of musicianship and a focus on the body being a temple(StraightEdge)...

Oh well, enough with the history. I personally think EMO nowadays sux..

hardcore was a outgrowth of punk, not of metal. straight edge had its salad days (you like that?) in the 80's, not the 90's. some hardcore prized musicianship to various levels, but it never fetishized it... like some metal...

The "emo's" nowadays are indeed just some lame goth-ripoff kids that were black and stuff to be cool. OK, that's part of growing up I guess, sub-cultures etc.
Sad thing, almost none of them 15 year-olds know the background of it, that it goes back to beginning of the 90's, bands like American Football, Appleseed Cast, Planes Mistaken For Stars (old work), Get up Kids (four minute mile), that particular 'sound' (i'm more fan of the softer post-emo sound idd).
That music gives a feeling that is truly 'emo' (damn, hating the term) and what it's about. Not that shit like My Chemical Romance and other "i scream bad lyrics to let girls scream and pay lots of money"-bands.

Emo = Conformist. Plain and simple. Look around you..think your differnt? how many other people do you know or see that wear the same sh*t as you or have their hair the same style? which is typically over one eye for an emo. Yes I said TYPICALLY. you want to know why? BECAUSE YOUR ALL THE SAME. If can't see that..trying moving the hair out from over your eye and looking around. Yeah..there's alot of you. Now to some people being like everyone else and "fitting in" is just fine to them. I myself dont see the point in conforming to a fad. Which is exactly what emo is. But maybe to some it's a way of life..i dont know. "Crash of me" said he/she wanted to be emo. why? do you want to be the same as a large amount of are population today? DO YOU HAVE NO SENSE OF INDIVDUALITY!? why be like everyone else when you can be your own person? Personally I think its cooler to be your own person..with your own sense of style..and way of thinking. You might find that people like you alot more then, or not. God those tight pants must be hell on your junk (for all those emo guys out there). If you want to be emotional..then why not be yourself and do it is all Im saying. Now cutting I know for a fact isnt something that just an EMO person does. You might be suprised but preppy or chav people do it to. As well as goth and nerdy people. Cutting is just another way of conforming..its been made so popular that people have started to do it. OF ALL KINDS OF STEROTYPICAL GROUPS. Sure sterotypes suck, but we have them. In way one or another we are ALL sterotypical. By telling other people not to be sterotypical your being hypocritcal. Believe it or not but we all sterotype. If an EMO calls themselves EMO then there sterotyping themsevels. Anywho.. I think I kinda ventured off there..but I guess the point of all this was to tell you just to be yourself. Im not syaing to change..but dont change into other people.

Also, I personally dont like "EMO" music such as fallout boy, my chemical romance, yellowcard, sum 41, hawthorne heights. Taking back sunday..etc. Not because other people say it's EMO..but I just cant stand the tone of the singers..and the stuff they sing about. You can find good "softish" music in other bands outside of EMO music. Such as A perfect Circle, Tool (which can be a little soft at times) Opeth, (which can also be soft at times aswell) Deftones, Alice in Chains, Earshot, Foo fighters, Seether, Soundgarden, theres tons of good music out there. If you havnt heard any of these bands I suggest you look em up some time. You never know..might find a band you like. I also listen to alot of harder stuff(such as Cannibal Corpse, Watch Them Die, Mastodon, Lamb of God, Chimaria ETC)..but I like all kinds of rock. Not becuase of what there classifed as but for how they sound and what they sing about. But I enjoy my softer music aswell. For all you EMO people out there..if you havnt heard Mudvayne then i suggest you check them out aswell. They sing about suff involing relastionships and stuff lol XP

I cut myself, am extemely sensitive and let my feelings out by writing poems and crying. I don't dress in black and where tight pants or anything like that, and i listen to all different kinds of music. Emo is just a fad some people made up and were just lucky that someone liked it. Emo should be for anyone over 30 because by that time, if youve been luck enough not to be sheltered your life has been rough so you have a reason to be emotional about things. Fads are a part of human nature, individuality is dead especially in high school where your judged on your clothes, hair and who you assiociate with. Well, all I have to say after reading several comments, is that this has gone far off topic. I think who ever made this didn't intend on everyone arguing like they are. It reminds me of several things that are going to go off topic and this itself is off topic, but please stop arguing so much. If you wish to argue like this, then find a bunch of people on AIM or something and then start a topic, which of course you'll have people who won't agree and to that point you can begin your arguments. Supposed to write an article, but yeah .... no luck atm ~ Anyway, I have to admit, I'm pretty scared of emos, even though i know they're just normal people who favour the colour black etc. When I see them in town, all in one big group, it scares me. It's like they'll attack me or something lol, but again, i know they're just like everyone else, but dress in a unique way. I actually like some of the hardcore music {not sure if its emo music? I have no issues with Emo's, that is a personal choice. As a personal choice, who is to say if it is right or wrong? Sure, they can be annoying, and sure they seem to not have a comprehending of life in all of its entirety. Then again, who does? No one has a right to judge them, just as they do not judge us. You all are damned hypocrites if you think they are less then you.
Emo's are good people, you should spend less time judging them, and more time getting to know them a bit.
