ZAO All Else Failed Re-release
Published January 19, 2003
The band that just won’t die, ZAO, is back with their (so they say) last freshly recorded material (rumors of a “best of” are still floating around). In this re-release of All Else Failed, the bands first full-length effort from the days of Sean Jonas, but similarities are few and far between. In fact, with the exception of the lyrics, the efforts are as opposite as the two vocalists from the zao “eras”.
On Resistance, familiar chords can faintly be deciphered through the barrage that is Dan’s vocal stylings. The spirit-filled “feel” however, is gone. No more hands raised to the sky. No more tear-invoking praise. It is a metal-core album, not to be confused with genres of late.
The rest of the album is the same. Nothing spectacular—nothing below average. The whole CD screams mediocrity. It is an attempt, I fear, to fulfill a contractual obligation with their record label, and unfortunately, not a CD that sounds like the band really enjoyed what they were doing. One “stand above the rest” track on the album is Exchange, which Dan manages to make his own, and by so doing, makes into a great metal-core version of the original.
ZAO is my all-time favorite band; lest readers think some type of preconceived “hater” mentality was used in the writing of this review. The best thing about this CD is that it is fresh material from, in my opinion, one of the greatest metal-core bands to have ever existed. To bad it couldn’t have been a more concerted effort. It would have been nice to see ZAO go out with a bang.

Hey, for what it's worth at least they re-recorded the songs. THink how easy it could have been for Solid STate to just repress it, ya know?
they prob. would have if it hadn't already been done once. I think I almost would have preffered a repress.=(
actually, dogwood rerecorded the for Self Titled..aka THIS IS NOT A NEW ALBUM. you can still get those lovely blamed albums from T&N, and for the love of God, why not a great Zao Live video and cd. thankyou.
I have to agree with you Jeff, this does feel like a "contractual obligation" sort of thing, which is sad. From what I've heard of it though, I like it...of course, I've never really listened to the old one... :)
I personally like it better than the old one, but then again I was never a fan of Shawn Jonas's vocal stylings.
Shawn was not great on those albums, but he has a new band named Symphony in Peril, and they rock. The new album is going to be ok, but definately better than POC. Definately the best band of all time.
The original all else failed is one of my all time favorite cd's. I've had it for 5 years and i still love it! The re-release is horrible from what i've heard so far. Not that the old cd was fast but, the songs are played way to slow. The emotion that the original cd had was amazing. I think that The NU zao needed to give up along time ago or at least changed there name. They destroyed a classic!
Let them make their music, If you don't like it don't listen. I personally feel that zao has delt with enough E talk. It's their cd, What ever they do, And how they do it, Is not up for debate. They wrote the music, They play it. If you don't want to listen fine. Walk away quetly. I hate critics. Because most critics will never play music, Will never understand the true meaning of the music. It's their creation, They have all the power in the world to do what ever they see fit. If it was made for tying up contractual loose ends so be it. You, I, And joe critic have no right to say anything about someone elses creation, Or choices! Who cares. Get off the internet and go do something worthwhile, instead of hiding behind a screen.
Hey bro, hey i didn't mean to come off as a jerk, wich i did anyway. But, for one they didn't write the music. Jesse was the only one on that cd that remains in the band, so i guess he's covered. Its nothing against them as people. It's just that there is a huge lack of so called "christian music". I don't know wether or not they are still christians, but that cd brought something with it that is extremely hard to find in the world today. Christian music to me and well what i though it was about, is the spirit and feeling that comes with it and most importantly the love of Jesus Christ. There was a great amount of passion that came out of every word and every note, and it wasn't there on the re-issue.
Next on thee ol list: Sad but true, i'm a musician. Music has played a huge part in my life. Heck if it wasn't for Zao I don't think i would be a Christian. And I thank Those guys a million times for the help to make a step in the right direction.
#3: We are in the same boat. Just as I had something to say about the cd, you had something to say about my comment wich then makes you a critic yourself. And you much like myself have left our words for the whole world to see while we sit behind a screen. This thing is made for letting people know how we feel about a particular topic. Its up to the reader to take what we say to heart or not. Hey email me it should be linked. You seem like a good guy. GOD BLESS
Dear sir,
My post was not an attack on you personally. It was an attack(If you can call it that.)on so many who have nothing better to do than attack a band based on beliefs(not that you were). Past or present. I too have many thanks to send to zao for years of inspiration. The only personal thing i direct at you is; To say they needed to give up long ago, Or to make references to Nu metal was a bit unfair. They(Past and present members) wrote What they saw fit. People change, Ideas mature. I feel that's what zao did. I was a bit broken hearted to see the lack of outright praise as well, but not to the point of discrediting the music. Maybe i am misunderstanding your message, Who knows? I hope this clears the air a little. Our boat seems to be sinking a little faster now. New email linked, This one should work.
