Carnival of the Vanities - Season #13
Published December 18, 2002
Eleven Day Empire - Where have We Heard This Before? — This episode explores many of the themes in "Agendas and Actions," but particularly focuses on how the political process can corrupt honest desire to root out evil.
Feste's Best - They Danced by the Light of the Moon — In which our hero waxes lyrically about the only regret of those who do evil-getting caught.
Skippy the Bush Kangaroo - cue claude raines: i'm shocked, shocked! to find there is racism in this establishment! — In which our hero exhorts his comrades to not limit themselves to the ouster of one racist exemplar, but to go after all of them.
The Gleeful Extremist - Personal Story of Lott's Idiocy — In which our hero discovers that a powerful political figure isn't just a racist-he's an asshole, too.
THE SELF-REFLECTION EPISODES
This season also featured two poignant episodes in which the writers took the time to have our hero reflect upon himself, remember the past, and grow overall as a character.
Michael Finley - Who Are You? — In this poignant episode, Finley makes clever use of a party our hero attends as a backdrop in examining the judgment of others and how what we do is far too often more important a factor in how we are perceived than who we truly are.
Ham Fisted Theatrics - Van Gogh Knew What Time It Was — This powerful exercise in characterization uses an art museum as a backdrop for our hero to examine his own character as expressed through the works of the masters.
COMEDY
Carnival of the Vanities was often noted for its intense drama and gripping action. But it had its fair share of light-hearted moments, as well. Here are a few of the gems from Season 13.
Madeleine Kane - Bush Loves Things Just The Way They Are — In this, one of the few musical episodes of the series, writer Kane devotes an entire episode to having our hero parody the President in song.
The Gleeful Extremist - Arena Football Tries To Define Itself As Real Football — In which our hero stands up for traditional football against the godawful atrocity that is Arena Football.
Amish Tech Support - Sex and the Nativity — Using the amusing backstory of our hero capturing a villain "in the act", this episode explores the treatment of bestiality in different religions with warmth and wit.
