Those guys from that band...
Published December 02, 2002
I went home this thanksgiving weekend and listened to the big rock station in LA, KROQ. The station has been very influential on global media. They were the first to play many bands that achieved stardom, and brought you Carson Daily, Adam Corolla, and Jimmy Kimmel. The station is hard to listen to now. The current play list is chalked full of former bands and current bands of former rock stars. Every time I hear nirvana I get a little twitch in my neck. I didn't like them much in the first place, so it's a cruel irony that they're held up and placed on a pedestal, and played every 40 minutes on the radio.
Lets expand this... Dave Grohl. Good ol' Davey of Nirvana stardom has two other bands that get played within those 40 minutes. Just between you and me the new Foo Fighters album is not good and Queens of the Stone Age exist because they are marketable.
Another dead band, Sublime, can be heard constantly within the 40 minute time span. Now, with this band I used to be a fan, but I can't take "Bad Fish" anymore. Even the surviving members who made Long Beach Dub All Stars get air play, and their concert is one too miss at all costs. Please call KROQ (1-800-520-1067) and tell them to play something new for a change.
Rage against the machine, now I know for a fact that they suck live, I've seen them suck live. It was a god awful out of tune mess on stage. And the current reincarnation known as Audioslave.... could someone tell me why this shit is on the radio?
The crap off their album should never have made it past the station manager's desk; they are only played because of notability. The verbal asterisk placed at the end of their song when its played, "that was Audioslave with former members of rage against the machine and Chris Cornell from Soundgarden" really is just to let you know that even though it might suck, it is from people we told you to like years back, and you are going to like them again.
The stuff you hear on the radio today is not a reflection of what is popular or society. It is what was popular and what can make money. This makes it incredibly hard for bands to break through. The new talent and sounds out there have no chance as long as Box Car Racer and Long Beach Dub All Stars are played along side, even back to back with Sublime and Blink 182.
Do me a favor and go check out your local bands. See something original and then support it. For your listening enjoyment I have inclueded three albums that rock, and that you won't hear on the radio.

Matt, some bands get famous by touring and making good music. Others such as audioslave get famous because the radio knows its easy to sell, reguardless of the quality of the music.
^^there it was, that was the point of my entire post. I dont know if it entirely came through.
see, carson daily sucks.
and Queens of the Stone Age actually have talent whether you choose to see it or not.
peace.
Since when is a concept album about how radio sucks "marketable"? Have you even heard the record?
And as for Rage sucking live? You've got to be kidding me! I saw them twice and they were one of the most energetic and charismatic bands I've ever seen. If you don't like their music that's fine, but that doesn't mean they suck live.
No, they were out of tune and at sevral points out of rhythm. Thats just not good musicianship. Some bands just dont sound that good live, despite great chemistry.

honestly, my life may be better without carson daily, jimmy kimmel and adam corolla. and wouldn't what is popular in society be what sells? what you hear on the radio is popular, and is indicative of society's interests. if it wasn't, how would some bands exist? they provide music to which people enjoy listening.
