The Best of the Best, Part II

Part 2 of the current best of the best, as rated by yours truly. I tried to include something from all of the different genres that I listen to on a regular basis. I also only included one disc by each artist (example, I would list ANY disc by The Police or Iron Maiden and most of Metallica's discography, but I needed to narrow it down a little further than that) This list is as I feel right now, since this list changes dramatically on a daily or even minutely basis. In no particular order:

  • Exodus Last Act Of Defiance (Out of Print?? I can't find this CD online anywhere... perhaps E-bay?) Old school '80's thrash metal by a band who still does it well. This was their best. I still sing "The Toxic Waltz" at odd times. This one is so heavy you'll need a crane to lift it.
  • Disturbed The Sickness One of the few "Nu-Metal" groups I actually like. The new one is good, too, but I like this one better.
  • Iron Maiden Powerslave Picking ONE Iron Maiden disc for this list is extremely difficult for me, so I went with the one that I first saw them on. The "World Slavery Tour" is the first time I saw Iron Maiden live, which makes this disc special to me. The songs are unforgettable and the show was wild. Check out "Aces High," the classic "Rime Of The Ancient Mariner," and my favorite from the disc, "Two Minutes To Midnight" and you'll know why this is on the list.
  • Mean Gene Kelton & The Die Hards Most Requested Blues rockabily from Texas. This one ranges from slow, burning blues to upbeat danceable rock 'n roll. The best band I've never seen, unfortunately.
  • Echobrain Echobrain When Jason Newstead left Metallica, people thought he was nuts. This proves that he was just itching to make some different music. Jazz fused with rock, this is NOT what you would expect of someone who played with Metallica for over 10 years. Very groovy and slick. I love this disc.
  • Rise Above: 24 Black Flag Songs To Benefit The West Memphis Three I recently reviewed this one, right here at BlogCritics, but it needs a spot on this list. Simply the best collection of Black Flag songs I've ever heard.
  • Minor Threat Complete Discography Everything Minor Threat every released on one CD. Not a band that was around for long, but a powerhouse in early Punk Rock.
  • Biohazard Urban Discipline Another one that I reviewed here, fairly recently. This is pretty much the one that started the "Nu-Metal" thing that unfortunately keeps happening these days.
  • Rest In Pieces Under My Skin A side project of Armand Majidi from Sick Of It All, this one is long out of print, but worth it if you can lay your hands on a copy. Incredible hardcore done the NYC street way.
  • N.W.A. Straight Outta Compton Classic, just totally classic. You can't find this kind of longetivity in today's mass-produced rap market.
  • Pearl Jam Ten Maybe Nirvana started grunge, but Pearl Jam perfected it with this incredible debut that hasn't been matched since. The way they combine that slower grunge music with lyrics that hardly make sense most of the time is absolutely stunning. This is the ONLY Pearl Jam I own or recommend. Trust me, the German/Holland import version is worth every extra penny you spend. The three extra tracks, especially "Dirty Frank" are the best PJ ever recorded.
Don't miss Part I & Part III.

That Exodus album is actually called Fabulous Disaster, and I believe it is still in print.
