My Spacecoaster - EP2

I've been listening to these guys for awhile, dating back to their split CD with Society's Finest. Throughout the years I've always been impressed with the vocal delivery of John LaMonica. I've always thought that he could carry a group onto heavy MTV rotation with his ability, his simple-enough guitar playing, and song writing.

The CD starts out with an energetic, "I Don't Care", complete with busy drum work and the trademark vocals that I'm a sucker for. This is a guitar driven song with interesting enough dynamics to keep your attention.

Next is, "Virgin", the CD's lone instrumental track. It starts all "anthem rock"-ish but cuts into a great guitar part with an awesome bass line leading the way beneath it all. For an almost three minute instrumental it easily holds my attention.

"Round" is next which is one of those songs I could see on MTV, complete with slammed doors and a hot chick walking down a sidewalk, upset at her boyfriend played, of course, by John. This is your typical guitar driven song with the bass leading the direction and feel of the song from time to time. Props to Bradley Hensarling for getting creative with the four-string.

I think the 4th track, "Surprise" could have been left off this EP. It's an acoustic guitar and John singing along and it just seems to throw a curve ball into an otherwise energetic mix of songs. Great lyrical work, but it just seems out of place.

The 5th and final track, "Everything Is As Though It Never Was" will easily wake you up from the previous track. Start with some feedback, a great distorted guitar and bass, and great sounding drums and you got this great song. The production sounds a little soupy here, but I think it really adds to the song if you can understand that. If you close your eyes you can almost picture the band playing and getting some guys sweat soaked shirt in your face. That's why I like sitting at home and listening to CD's!

The layout of the CD is very plain and simple. A great use of color is going on here but I thought the inside could have been done a lot better. Isn't there a federal law against not including lyrics with a CD? If not I think we need one on the books.

If you want a lively collection of songs, complete with strong vocals, interesting bass lines, and solid drumming, then you'll want to buy this CD. Get it from Lujo Records today and discover the joy of My Spacecoaster.
