This is Josh Benton's October mix. Nicely done packaging in a slimline case with a very neat insert. The front has a picture of a rotweiller and the title and the back has the tracklisting, in block format. The only complaint is the track numbers are in word form. More info on the songs an the particular selection can be found at the above link. The music:
- Death Cab For Cutie "Photobooth" - Beautifully done, sweet song. Nice vocals, subtle electronics and a great drum track.
- Capitol K "Pillow" - I like this one a whole lot. Techno with enough guitar to make it almost industrialish. The vocals really fit into the song.
- Strafe "Set It Off" - Nice, danceable track. Midtempo techno stuff with a nice catch line "Let's get this party started, right?"
- Interpol "PDA" - Popcore, I like to call this style. Power pop in the style of The Ataris. I like it, though.
- Arab Strap "The First Big Weekend" - Sometimes, the strangest things work the best. This is one of the oddest things I've heard in a LONG time. As Josh says, "Everybody needs a little Scottish monologue once in a while." Um, yeah.
- Golden "Feel This Flow" - Very Glenn Frey-ish. Nice song for driving.
- Enon "Natural Disasters" - Fun, upbeat song. I love the vocal melodies.
- Calexio "Stray" - Smooth song with a modern big-bandish sound. I like it a whole lot.
- Velvet Crush "Mr. Spaceman" - I vaguely remember hearing some Velvet Crush at some point when I was into "alternative rock" radio. This is a neat country-rock song and the vocalist is quite good.
- Television "Friction" - The vocalist isn't that good and the song should be faster. Nice guitar work though. Not a bad song, but not a good one, either.
- Rainer Maria "Thought I Was" - This song sounds SOOOO familiar, I'm convinced I've heard it somewhere. A good song, although it needs a little variety in the guitar track. The drumming is exceptional.
- Spoon "Lafitte, Don't Fail Me Now" - I think this song sounds like something off of Soul Asylum's Let Your Dim Light Shine, which I loved. Same vibe, same feel.
- Sonic Youth "The Empty Page" - A friend of mine in college kept trying to get me into these guys. I never could get into them, since I felt a band named Sonic Youth should have a whole lot more agression and energy. Another notbadbutnotgoodeither track.
- Sea Ray "Revelry" - Another good song with an extremely repetitive guitar track. The bass line is awesome, though.
- For Stars "Field Of Fire" - O.K. song, but the weepie style vocals grate on my nerves. It's a really good song if you're into that type of vocal style.
- The Polyphonic Spree "Section 9" - I can't explain why I like this one, really. It's symphonic pop style would normally make me change the channel if I were listening to the radio, but the Pink Floydesqe sound makes it listenable.
- Mike Doughty "Sunkeneyed Girl" - Another one that smokes. Nice vocals, smooth acoustic guitar and not much else. His sardonic sense of humor is displayed at several times, actually making the audience laugh. This is my favorite song on the disc.
- The Police "Man In A Suitcase" - One of, if not THE first band I was really into. I own everything they've ever released, most in multiple formats. Great song by a great band that I miss a whole lot. Nothing any of them has done since (except perhaps Sting's Ten Summoner's Tales, which came close) has touched the material they did together.
- Shuggie Otis "Strawberry Letter 23" - An odd eerie feeling comes from the keyboards in this song, sort of like some of the music from 2001: A Space Oddesey. I like it.
