TOP TEN SCARIEST MOVIES OF ALL TIME

Written by Dawn Olsen
Published October 31, 2002

Let's move this party to the family room and list SCARIEST MOVIES OF ALL TIME.

I am the gore champ. I was seeing scary movies at age ten with my dad. Sure it looked a little odd taking your ten year old daughter to see THE FUNHOUSE, but hey, it's better than my mom and I going to see FLESH GORDON.

Drumroll please...................

TOP TEN SCARIEST MOVIES OF ALL TIME:

10. Pyscho - Yes, it was scary, some say the scariest, but I am just too jaded to give it any higher that 10.

9. Nightmare on Elm Street - Good heavens did that give me nightmares, I can't even be in the same room with striped sweaters.

8. Trilogy of Terror - Karen Black, possessed dolls, witchcraft, my parents should be jailed for letting me watch this. I can't even BEGIN to tell you how freaking scared I was, still won't leave my feet hanging over the bed.

7. The Exorcist - All movies about possession are JUST FUCKING WRONG.

6. Friday The 13th - The first one I ever saw and kept me awake for about six months. The scene where Kevin Bacon gets it through the neck with an arrow - post-coital death - THAT IS JUST WRONG.

5. Halloween - Well this is just plain obvious - plus anything with Jamie Lee Curtis - mmmmmm......

4. The Shining - More possession and insane people - just the idea of it. Yikes.

3. Phantasm/Salem's Lot - Just creepy and gross - horror and sci-fi the best combination - they are tied.

2. Texas Chainsaw Masacre - More reasons to be afraid of Texas - terrorized teens, bloodthirsy hicks. Got To Love It.

1. Night Of The Living Dead - Being the eternal optimist that I am, this movie
removes all hope and is a testament in futility, everyone will be consumed by the living dead. Just horrific in every way. A CLASSIC - Forever

Okay there is another movie and I can't remember the name of it, late 70's early 80's about a woman, single mom I think, living in California maybe, and she is visited upon by an invisible demon (that is what we are led to believe) some kind of possession shit. Supposed to be based an a true story. In the movie she is attacked, raped and just plain tortured by this thing - VERY FUCKING SCARY. I thought Karen Allen was in it - but I guess not. If anyone thinks of it - I will be in your debt. [turns out it was The Entity with Barbara Hershey]

Happy Halloween!

Please don't roll your eyes (hey!) but "The Blair Witch Project" scared the bejesus out of me. On the other hand, I also loved "The Bare Wench Project" so it all evens out.

#2 — March 10, 2003 @ 15:26PM — kenny

i have to disagree with your ratings although as a true horror film fanactic i love all the movies on your list but to not have the exorcist at #1 is just plain foolish, it was an still is the scariest most demented movies ever created with nothing but pure evil throughout .... i mean come on a 12 yr old girl stabbing her self in the private parts with a crusafix while screaming the words f**k me that scene alone defines how outrageous this film truly is especially when factor in this was pre 1980's ...... oh and i know norrowing the field down to ten is a hard thing to but i hope u gave ,hellraiser, candyman and a couple others some good consideration.... p.s i here house of a 1,000 corpses by rob zombie is gonna awsome and become a instant cult classic... well thats my 2 cents

#3 — March 15, 2003 @ 13:46PM — Scott

I have to disagree with your list as well. There should not be a top 10 list because there isn't even a number 1 scary movie. I watched The Ring last night and was extremely disappointed. Signs was a flop. The 6th sense was a good movie but not scary. Silence of the Lambs, ditto. I've watched most of the movies on your list and have yet in my life had any sort of nightmare based on the films, or at all for that matter. Make a movie that will give me nightmares and it will be the number 1 scariest movie on your list guaranteed. The movie makers are going about it all wrong, anyway. I'm going to see if I can get The Entity tonight.

#4 — May 11, 2003 @ 05:56AM — laurie

Must see The Clown House ,its truly the scariest movie yet, clowns scare me to death now

#5 — May 11, 2003 @ 07:07AM — jadester

unfortunately, i have not seen many of the films on your list. However, i question the leaving out of such classics as Jaws and Arachnophobia(sp?), both films that effectively incite fear of the "nasty" animal featured (spiders and sharks)
i know plenty of people that don't like to swim out of their depth in the sea, no matter where in the world they are, because of the possiblity of a shark attack (ingrained on their minds thanks to Jaws) - now that HAS to be an achievment. Then there's Alien - i suspect it would be doubly effective if you haven't seen any of the other films in the series and don't really know the story (unfortunately by the time i saw it i had seen Aliens, however it still has scary moments)

#6 — May 11, 2003 @ 09:10AM — Mark Spencer

I have seen all the movies in your top ten and none of them particularly scared me. The true most frightening film of all time (wait for it) . . . is Watership Down.

Yes, it's a cartoon kids film about rabbits, but when the Nazi rabbits start tearing off the innocent rabbits' ears in reprisals, or when the Evil Rabbit (cool Roots Manuva song also based on that theme) gets trapped in the slavering jaws of that enormous black dog - THAT, ladies and gents, that is true fear.

Since I saw it a decade ago I have barely had a good night's sleep.

And I'm being serious.

#7 — June 4, 2003 @ 18:36PM — brian

The scariest movie of all time is the Exorcist.

#8 — August 17, 2003 @ 19:52PM — sarah [URL]

your all wrong!! The Ring almost made me sh** my pants screaming so loud! i used to be an all time scary movie lover but ever since this blood curdling movie, ive been scared stiff.

#9 — August 17, 2003 @ 19:57PM — David smithinson [URL]

THE RING and THE EXORCIST are the scariest movies ever made

#10 — August 17, 2003 @ 22:40PM — Cindy Collins Smith [URL]

Okay, I've seen all but two of the movies on your list. I thought that FRIDAY THE 13TH and HALLOWEEN were pretty scary, but I didn't find NIGHTMARE ON ELM STREET scary at all. It was a pretty good movie though.

NOLTD and CHAINSAW and PSYCHO are all awesome scare-fests. (BTW, if you don't think PSYCHO is all that scary, see it on the big screen without interruption. That's how I saw it on my third viewing of the film and it scared the crap out of me).

Anyway, I publish on horror movies in books, so needless to say I've been exposed to a much wider spectrum of horror than most horror fans have. That's not a brag. It's more like an invitation to check some of THESE out and see if you think they're scary or not...

The ORIGINAL film version of THE HAUNTING. No, not that stupid color movie from a few years ago. I'm talking about the b/w film from the early 60s. A lot of horror movie historians consider THIS to be the scariest horror movie ever made. BLAIR WITCH fans should love it, incidentally, since BLAIR WITCH is using similar psychological mechanisms to scare the audience. (Suggestion, psychological terror rather than directly showing what's happening).

THE BLACK CAT, produced by Val Lewton--the originator of the psychological terror film (which influenced THE HAUNTING, BLAIR WITCH and two of Shyamalan's films).

INVASION OF THE BODY SNATCHERS. Technically a science fiction movie, but it's a lot scarier than that. Another psychological terror film.

SUSPIRIA. Italian supernatural horror film. A lot of people find it VERY scary. It's very intense, whether you find it scary or not.

DEEP RED. An Italian giallo movie. Giallo films are the predecessors of the American slasher movies. This is a very good one.

BLOOD AND BLACK LACE. The first giallo movie. Made in the early 1960s. (Not as scary IMO as DEEP RED, but it will definitely show you where slashers came from).

The Italian movies, incidentally, are in brilliant, gorgeous color. The American movies mentioned above are all in b/w.

Oh, and btw, I saw THE EXORCIST when it first hit the theater (I was 16). It was scary, but I think ROSEMARY'S BABY is a MUCH MORE DISTURBING movie. You think NIGHT OF THE LIVING DEAD will mess with your eternal optimism? Check out ROSEMARY'S BABY. It's virtually the ULTIMATE movie about futility.

Also... check out DAWN OF THE DEAD (a.k.a. Zombies at the mall). It's very funny in its own perverse way (just as CHAINSAW is very funny), but it's even more pessimistic than NIGHT OF THE LIVING DEAD. And it's also made by George Romero.

#11 — August 23, 2003 @ 10:53AM — Corey

Aren't you forgetting about Evil Dead that scared the hell out of me I stayed up for ten nights because of that.I know freddy vs jason is new but that movie was real good scary the part that really freaked me out was 1,2 freddy comin for you 3,4 you better lock your door and so on. I also disagree with your standings Freddy Jason or Phantasm BOY!!

#12 — August 23, 2003 @ 11:30AM — andy

what about army of darkness? haha! that movie was so funny it was scary!

#13 — September 7, 2003 @ 12:53PM — Sandra

The Hills Have Eyes gets my vote, seen all of the top ten but this one for me takes the cake.

#14 — September 7, 2003 @ 13:53PM — ScottM

Don't forget about THE CHANGELING. You can finally check it out on a decent DVD from HBO video. That's one creeeeeepy movie w/ a terrific performance from the immortal George C Scott.

#15 — September 7, 2003 @ 13:59PM — ScottM

...and the opening 30minutes of the original Jeepers Creepers!

#16 — September 22, 2003 @ 22:23PM — pauly

the thing i hate the most about horror films, and wut always makes them not scary is shitty monsters finally revealed at the end. movies that make u imagine and believe in your imagined monsters are the best, thats the beauty of BWP and those types of movies. horror movies dont have to have monsters either, if u want something to shock and scare, rent "SALO" and italian flick

#17 — September 22, 2003 @ 23:10PM — Chris Arabia [URL]

Three offbeat choices (more scary less horror):

Midnight Express was frightening, especially to those of us who have seen the business end of the rifles of troops in some crooked backwater.

Deliverance.

8mm--a lousy movie but that whole scene is a downer, man, a real downer.

#18 — September 30, 2003 @ 02:06AM — david

THE ULTIMATE TOP 5

THE EXORCIST
THE SHINING
THE CHANGELING
THE RING
ANYTHING WITH KEANU REEVES

#19 — September 30, 2003 @ 02:08AM — sam jacobs

I agree with the above. Two more lesser known ones not mentioned anywhere here, but worthy of checking out are: Burnt Offerings and Beyond the Door

#20 — September 30, 2003 @ 04:04AM — Phil [URL]

The ring almost made me pee my pants. My electric bill was high that month with all the lights I left on. I won't even watch the EXORCIST I like scary movies, but not that much :)

#21 — September 30, 2003 @ 05:42AM — Krishnan

Hi, how about Hitchcock's The Birds? It did leave me scared, and dreaming about them attacking me and my family for quite some days after! And to think I watched it on a 21-inch TV - what if it had been full-screen viewing? The sound effects are particularly brilliant!

#22 — September 30, 2003 @ 09:34AM — Phillip Winn [URL]

The Ring was a scary movie? Maybe for twelve-year-old girls at a slumber party!

Dawn, you list actually rocks pretty hard. I have seen every movie on the list, but the ones I've seen are pretty darned scary. THanks!

#23 — September 30, 2003 @ 10:41AM — The Theory

hey now, Phillip... don't go calling me a 12 year old girl. Ouch. My feelings are hurt.

#24 — September 30, 2003 @ 13:08PM — Phillip Winn [URL]

First you're scared by The Ring, and then your feeling are hurt because I mistook you for a little girl? Boy, you're messed up!

No, TT, you know I'm kidding. You know I like you. Every movie probably scares somebody. Personally, I'm horrified by The Tigger Movie. When Tigger is in the woods, and there's that big tree... ::shivers::

Anyway, Dawn's lists contains classics that have clearly stood the test of time and will continue to do so. I don't think The Ring measures up.

#25 — September 30, 2003 @ 13:26PM — The Theory

I'm just Mr Messed-Up. mwahaha.

#26 — October 4, 2003 @ 20:04PM — Miki Jokinen

THE RING WAS WAS ACTUALLY QUIET FRIGHTENING MAINLY BECAUSE THE USE OFDARK AND DISTURBING IMAGES AND SOUNDS FLASHING THROUGH YOUR HEAD AND THE PART WHEIR THE LADY BAGS THE LITTLE GIRLS HEAD AND THROWS HERE IN THE WELL

#27 — October 4, 2003 @ 20:48PM — TDavid [URL]

People who go around the web using ALL CAPS are frightening. Maybe that should make the top 10. Ok, maybe it would be funny if comedians like the late, great Chris Farley typed in all caps.

#28 — October 5, 2003 @ 13:15PM — Michelle20s

I agree with alot of the posts... Nightmere on elm st part 1 when they didnt show freddy so much and you had to use your imagination! After a while the NMOES just got silly. Exorcist definitly top 5. Ametyville Horror's are just brilliant! But I saw a movie last night that I must say disturbed me and scared the hell out of me... Dont laff ... Fear.com! I am an old school horror movie freak, and so called scary movie's of today dont have what they use to... but this movie was really sick! I also saw Jeepers Creepers part 2, I was very impressed! JC 1 was good also. Dreamcatcher by steven king was also pretty good. Ive been checking out the new "scary movies" lately and fear.com takes the cake. Cant wait till texas chainsaw comes out next week in theaters!!!

#29 — October 6, 2003 @ 17:59PM — kim

the most scariest movie i ever watched and read was pet cemetary that even gave my dad nightmares and he dont even get them never. the ring wasnt scary at all freaky but not scary halloween wasnt scary friday the thirtenth part 1 was scary just a little but only the part about the arrow the only time i ever watched the exorcist was when i was by my self but it was on tv and it took out all the good parts if you think night of the living dead was scary then you are just plain chicken it was more funny than scary the shining aanf the texas chainsaw masacre are great both fun and scary awsome movies i also liked the stand i wathced it by myself wasnt really sccary just made me think alot and made me jump in certain places.i love stephenking scary movies nothing beats them

#30 — October 7, 2003 @ 01:31AM — voodoochile

I think any movie depicting children possesed or controlled by evil forces is scary. Eg:- The Exorcist, The Others,The Ring, etc.....

#31 — October 7, 2003 @ 20:45PM — steve

well, ive seen some of the movies on your list and alot that other people have mentioned. i believe god has put me on a quest to find the scariest damn movie out there and so far non of the ones ive seen have qualified. somebody e mail me with a movie that will scare me. i want to jump and shake and close my eyes through out the hole movie. at the end i want to be curled up in a ball in the corner of my seat. for the record i thought 13 ghosts was a teet spooky, just my opinion. peace easy.

#32 — October 7, 2003 @ 20:54PM — andy

Ok I finally saw The Ring 2 days ago...and the judgement is...

NOT SCARY! NOT EVEN CLOSE!

Come on. The only remotely creepy thing was w/ the girl coming through the TV set. That was amazingly erie, but it looked cool as balls.

NOT SCARY.

#33 — October 12, 2003 @ 17:25PM — ~*jessica*~

ok well whoever says that the ring isnt scary is CRAZY!! i think it was one of the best scary movies ive seen in a while.. it was scary but didnt have too bad of a lasting effect. im always on the look out for a good scary movie thats not rated R cause my parents are gay and wont let me see them.. let me know if u know of any good ones that i could see!

#34 — October 12, 2003 @ 17:30PM — Tim Hall [URL]

A friend of mine claims the scariest movie he knows is "This is Bob Roberts", because it's too believable.

#35 — October 12, 2003 @ 17:51PM — Rodney Welch [URL]

What about Carrie, Rosemary's Baby and Village of the Damned? To me those are more truly scary than most if not all of what has already been mentioned.

#36 — October 14, 2003 @ 07:16AM — Bethany

The Vanishing, the original and the re-make,and One False Move are two very disturbing films..........

#37 — October 14, 2003 @ 10:16AM — jadester

Arachnophobia should be there - i don't have arachnophobia (in fact i quite like spiders) but the film still scared me
Jaws is also pretty scary - although i still manage to pluck up courage and swim out of my depth in the sea (especially after those reports of people getting attacked who then stab the shark in the eye and it lets go)
The remake of The Ring wasn't scary. maybe a little shocking, not to mention tense (will she survive or not?...)
Alien should DEFINITELY be there though. Maybe not the sequels, as you knew what was coming and they tended to play on the gore too much

#38 — October 15, 2003 @ 09:51AM — oblocal

No one has mentioned The Thing? Great pyschological thriller. Carpenter's remake is good, but the original B&W....

#39 — October 15, 2003 @ 10:56AM — Taloran

My wife and 12 and 7 year old kids love scary movies, but I have trouble suspending my disbelief. I loved the first Halloween when it first came out, thought it was quite tame the next time I saw it, and have not since seen anything that made me lose sleep.

#40 — October 15, 2003 @ 11:03AM — Eric Olsen

Dawn is going to redo/update the list for Halloween, although anything she hasn't already seen is out of the running as candidates for "scariest movie of all time" are out as a viewing option at 7 months pregnant.

#41 — October 15, 2003 @ 16:15PM — bob

I have seen alot of horror movies and none have scared me I would really like to be scared watching a horror movie Instaed of being bored.

#42 — October 17, 2003 @ 15:10PM — Nslhn

Suspiria is the scariest movie i've ever seen

#43 — October 22, 2003 @ 00:57AM — Jessi [URL]

I agree with your list mostly.
The movie you were describing is Rosemary's Baby, I think. I haven't seen it though.
A few movies that were on someone else's list were Seven, The Attic Expeditions, Final Destination (1 or 2), and Cabin Fever.
Final Destination and Cabin Fever are more gorey than anything, but they're still something that just makes you cringe, or look away. And then the images that you do see stick with you for a long time. (Cabin Fever is a bad movie, so I don't suggest you watch it. Just believe me when I say there are haunting images)
Take Care!

#44 — October 22, 2003 @ 22:35PM — Dragon

Re: the movie where the woman was attacked by the spirit... yes the entity was one but another wich really gave me the creeps and was along the same lines was called incubus. also, check out lets scare jessica to death...the town that dreaded sundown...night of the scarecrow.. for some good scares. btw good list! :)

#45 — October 22, 2003 @ 23:25PM — Taloran

My son says about "Nightmare..."

Oh My God, that scared them? That's so sad....

He's 12.

#46 — October 23, 2003 @ 03:23AM — Kelly

What about children of the corn?

#47 — October 23, 2003 @ 07:49AM — Andrew Ian Dodge [URL]

The Shining is the best horror movie of all time, bar none. Why? Because it didn't rely on schlock or gore to be suspenseful, that is why the first Psycho was so good as well. Why hasn't anyone mentioned Nosferatu?

Love the comment about anything with Keenu Reeves (expect Bill & Ted).

Another good thing about the Shining and Psycho is that you are actually prone to route for the good guys instead of wishing moronic teenagers, played by wooden actors, dead.

#48 — October 23, 2003 @ 09:13AM — BRICKLAYER

Henry, Portrait of a Serial Killer.

Okay, this may not technically fall into the horror category, but it was so disturbing that I feared Mrs. Bricklayer may file paperwork on me for making her watch it with me. (fear not, Bricklayer made everything A-okay with the missus-fellas, you know what I'm talkin' about)

#49 — October 23, 2003 @ 09:20AM — Andy

Nosferatu is amazing. Genuinly creepy. No one makes great horror like that anymore. That movie had a mood the whole way through it....that mood was....CREEP.

#50 — October 23, 2003 @ 12:58PM — John

My vote for one of the scariest flicks of all time is a little known early Brian de Palma film called Sisters. Margot Kidder starred in a dual role of two separated siamese twins--one good/one evil. With a super creepy Bernard Hermann score and some shocking murders, it still has the power to scare today. See it!

#51 — October 23, 2003 @ 23:53PM — Amber

I love Children Of The Corn... Mostly beacuse it's so stupid, it's funny. But it's still a great movie, with a great plot, at least to me : )

#52 — October 25, 2003 @ 18:08PM — Jack

Hey, The ring was shitty, I'm 15 and I watched it the whole time I was laughing at my sister who would chringe.
The movie was just too dumb, no offence to fans but it was truly not scary. I think that anyone who thinks it is scary needs to grow a pair. I think that a truly scary movies were the original texas chainsaw massacere, the jason movies, hallowween, and a few stephen king movies, also psycho

#53 — October 25, 2003 @ 19:39PM — randall ferraro

Salems Lot scarier than the Excorsist? What have you been huffing--glue? Watch them both again and get back to us.

Well everyone has a point based upon the older movies, But I am a fan of the Rob Zobbie movie the house of 1000 corps.
I found this movie to really get my attention and keep it from start to end, I have see this movie countless of times, the other movie that I found to be a good one to watch is "Wrong Turn". Both of the movies made me think man what would I do if that happened to me.

#56 — October 26, 2003 @ 00:49AM — ZachariahT

I've seen every movie listed by everyone. They are all scarey. Now some may laugh but I'm only 16 and for the past 3 years every weekend I sit and watch scary movie after scary movie. I've yet to find one that has knocked my socks off. The Exorsist, was scary but didn't seem real enough to freak me out. Texas Chainsaw Massicure was real enough but didn't scare me that much. I've been keeping journals of things that freak me out the most, as well as my friends, I've recently started writing the script... Soon my movie could be finding it's way into your houses. I've let some of my friends read some of my notes and they get kind of scared reading the ideas and looking at the pictures. Hopefully I do this right.

#57 — October 26, 2003 @ 22:02PM — ckla525

i was disappointed when I didnt see Even Horizon making the list

#58 — October 26, 2003 @ 22:22PM — Kayla

In my opinion one of the creepst movies i've seen in a while is The Ring. I saw this in the theater when it first came out and it really scared me. I was jumping out of my seat. the affects are awesome and i would sugguest renting it on halloween if you havent seen it and again if you have.

#59 — October 27, 2003 @ 15:23PM — Roberts

the ring - creepy, weird, fucked up - not scary. others on the list, i'd have to say that the Exorcist was pretty damn sick. the whole comin down the stairs with the backwards head pukin green shit...that takes the cake. other than that, the clown movie mentioned above was pretty weird. The whole Demons series was twisted as hell - check that one out if you want to piss yourself. Otherwise, its a matter of opinion and probably has something to do with what your twisted parents made you watch as a little kid. if you grew up watching the damned care bears, then yea, any of these movies will prolly scare you shitless...if you had a dad that made you watch some sick shit as a kid, then you'll be fine through most of these. !! got one for you!! the part in The Cell when the dude is pullin the other dude's intestines out...thats some scary ass shit. ultimatly, there isn't a scarriest movie of all time... so get over it.

#60 — October 27, 2003 @ 15:34PM — The Theory

*The Theory... grew up on Care Bears and found that both The Ring and The Cell were quite scary*

Hell, last night I watched Access Hollywood's top ten scary movies episode and got scared by the clips they showed of certain movies. i am pathetic.

#61 — October 27, 2003 @ 20:46PM — Puppy

Im 12 and the ring didn't scare me.
Sleepy Hollow wasn't scary at all either, but VERY good.

#62 — October 28, 2003 @ 14:04PM — kat

I thought the ring was pretty scary. My favorite scary movie was The texas chainsaw massacre. I watched iton opening night. It scared me so much i didn't watch half of it cuz i had my head buried in my arms. It actually shows more gore then most other movies.
I think u guys who thoguht psycho was scary are babies. The psycho wasn't anything but hilarious. I think a great movie is "IT" THAT ONES THE SHIT

#63 — October 28, 2003 @ 14:25PM — Ron Mwangaguhunga [URL]

5) Suspiria-- Argento's eerie rendering of repressed sexuality in a girls school in a remote part of Switzerland and the horror of ancient sorcery. Turn the sound up loud, turn out the lights and prepared for a visual and sonic assault.

4) The Monster Club-- Three gothic tales in the tradition of Edgar Allen Poe, each more sinister and eerie than the last. Is it cold in here or is it just the terror?

3)The Omen--Traips around the world -- to ancient cairns in remote Italiam graveyards, for example, to visit a priest named Abughadein with one eye blind and exposed in acrid blue. This is terror.

2) Demons -- Try on an ancient pagan mask, get cut, get infected with an ancient virus and turn into a demon. One of the scariest movies ever. No redeeming qualities.

1) Salem's Lot -- Lets go to a cold New England town in the 1970s where the undead cling to the chilly air of a land that displaced Native Americans and replaced them with ... vampires.

Honorable Mention) Jaws -- Okay, the ocean is our collective unconscious -- that having been said, once you swim in the ocean you enter the food chain. there is no greater instinctive fear that man has than becoming another animals food source. Nourishing them with our death.

4) Halloween -- The sheer sonic assault is second only to Suspiria; now, add the suburban normality of the late 70s, that creeping suspicion that ... something ... isn't ... RIGHT! Now, Michael Myers, in a leather mask -- unkillable -- stalks the rainy Halloween suburbs. the night is already tinged in chaos. Kids roam wild. Sugar is on everyones mind. Frantic. Chaos. Now add an unkillable killer with a sound man out of control.

#64 — October 28, 2003 @ 21:47PM — Craig

Obviously no one here has seen Let's scare Jessica to Death! I'm 39 years old and still remember the day I cried and my older brother had to take me home because I was so damn scared of this movie I couldn't even finish it. He was absolutely pissed at me because the theater wouldn't let him back in. That was 1971 folks, no special effects or gore, just pure, scare the living shit out of you to where you won't sleep for awhile or better yet, visit any country houses for awhile. This is 2003, it still gives me the creeps to think about it. Watch it, you'll never leave town!!!!!!!

This list was fine, however, I think the Exorcist part three should have been up there. Many people don't really understand it and how it connects into the first part. Part three, "The Legion", was great. It sorta made up for the disappointing production of part two, "The Heretic". It was actually as I read somewhere supposed to be part two but I don't remember what happened for them to change that. To get the full effect of any horror movie, I recommend watching it alone and in the dark. It makes a difference. The Ring to me was terrifying. I had never seen the previews, nor heard what it was about. A friend way back when the movie was in theatres recommended it to me since we are both horror movie fanatics, and I trusted his judgment. I think the people who did not like it nor find it scary had it built up too much to them and that basically ruined it. It's like telling someone the ending in the Sixth Sense; why bother and watch the movie after that. I own the first two parts of Ringu, the Japanese versions of the Ring. I didn't find them as scary although they are the originals, but that's perhaps I already have seen the English version of it. Ringu explains more than the Ring, however, the Ring had better special effects (the faces, and Samara)wow was she ever freaky. I honestly had images of her popping out of my t.v and computer monitor at night. Watching it in the theatres had a much bigger effect on me since I have seen it again on t.v and on my computer. I am excited about when the second part comes out, it will be terrific, but it will require a lot of work since the viewers already know the terror the first part exhibited thus becoming more immune to it. "It" turned me off clowns forever. I would beat any clown to death if they ever were to creep up to me, no joke. I was a kid when I watched it and never liked clowns since then. "The Omen" as well deserves some credit, it was fairly well done. I thought "The Omen" movies should have ended at three, a fourth part just didn't fit well.

the ring was soooooooooooo scary.

please lets not compare the ring to exorcist, the ring was not scary at all.

Yes, it was cheesy, but did anybody here ever see Captain Kirk in Kingdom of the Spiders? That movie bothered me when I was younger. Creepy crawlies taking over the world movie can be very unsettling because there are more creepy crawlies than humans on this earth.

Amityville Horror was an unsettling book but didn't transfer as well to screen.

#69 — October 30, 2003 @ 14:57PM — Tim

First of all, I don't think any comments should be posted with grammar like this:

the most scariest movie i ever watched and read was pet cemetary that even gave my dad nightmares and he dont even get them never -- Kim (retard!)

You are just bad at living!

But one of the scariest movies I've seen and that no one has mentioned yet would have to be "The Devil's Advocate" with Keanu Reeves and Al Pacino. Two of my favorite actors in a ruthlessly fucked up movie! It's not really that bloody or gory, but it just plays with your head & makes you about want to piss your pants. (side effects: NAUSEA!)

#70 — October 30, 2003 @ 14:58PM — TS

OK..you want a really creepy, scary flick?

The Other

Not "The Others" with Nicole Kidman- I am talking about the fild from 1972. VERY underrated scary movie...

#71 — October 30, 2003 @ 16:31PM — Sherry

I have to agree with the person who named the original The Haunting with Julie Christy - the whole atmosphere was scary - unlike the horror movies of today - there was no monster, you had to use your imagination - and that is what makes a great horror flick, when you scare out of your wits by something unknown.....really creepy. Check it out and you'll see.

#72 — October 30, 2003 @ 18:28PM — BRICKLAYER

Yo, did anyone give props to "Carrie" or "Rosemary's Baby" or "Silent Scream"? If so, my bad. And I gotta give big ups to "Exorcist 3"-seriously, that movie rocks.

#73 — October 30, 2003 @ 18:32PM — BRICKLAYER

Oh yeah, and "My bloody Valentine" and "The Stepfather".

And "The English Patient" left me quite traumatized also. I had to watch "Sixteen Candles" 6 times in row to get the bad taste out of my mouth!

#74 — October 30, 2003 @ 21:02PM — Amber (bee)

I have never seen any movie thats scared me not even the ring nor the exorcist. they bore me. There was one movie by Troy Taylor the guy who does the haunted decatur books and stories, which I would like to mention I do live in decatur, anyways the movie he made was called the st.fransiceville expirement. It starts out like blair witch then turns into the haunting, the only thing really scary about this is that THIS IS BASED ON A TRUE STORY! My dad is friends with Troy so thats even cooler. but in this movie there is some scary stuff. So scary it even scard me and it takes alot to scare me.
The movie starts out slow but towards the end its the best and the scariest, actually the begining is kinda gay but good.
Check it out!

#75 — October 30, 2003 @ 21:43PM — MQ

What about "Child's Play"? When I was a kid, I just couldn't sleep anywhere near the side of the bed because of that movie, but it's true that it would probably be more funny than scary now.
And yeah, "Stephen King's It" is really great although the ending is kinda weird.
They really aren't classics as the ones from the list, but they're still good IMO.
I recently saw "The Exorcist" again and fell asleep halfway through the movie :) Don't take it the wrong way, I still think it's great, it just stretches a bit too much in the middle.

#76 — October 31, 2003 @ 14:09PM — Insanity Sauce

The scariest movies of all time are the movies that play on what happen in everyday life. Texas Chainsaw Massacre and Psycho where based upon a real person, Ed Gein. The realistic possiblities or "it could happen to you" factor exist in my mind. Halloween had no effect same as Friday the Thirteenth simply because no one comes back again and again. BTW The Ring was mediocre at best. Scariest Scene in a movie is the killing of the boyfriend in Halloween when Michael Myers looks twistedly at his work, scary.

#77 — October 31, 2003 @ 14:26PM — Karen

I saw a good one a few years ago on cable with Andrew McCarthy in it. He is an architect over in England and sees dead folks and solves a 50 year old crime. Not scary so much as suspenseful and an "Others" and "Sixth Sense" sorta twist. Not out on video.

#78 — October 31, 2003 @ 14:40PM — Michael Myers

First of all let me start by saying to all of the "horror movie fans" who thought THE RING was scary arent real fans of horror movies. The only thing scary about that movie was the fact I got fooled into spending $8. to see it! I agree with the people who say there is no #1 horror movie of all time. I have seen every movie on Dawns list, pretty good list although I dont agree the order. One good scary movie not mentioned anywhere is "THE BURNING" your basic teenage-camp-slasher flick, worth seeing. "I Spit On Your Grave" isnt scary but its a pretty sick story about rape and revenge. Yeah "The Entity" was kinda scary too. Stephen Kings books are great but usually dont translate well onto the big screen, the are 2 exceptions though- "IT" and "Misery". Misery isnt scary but it is a cool story and the movie was made very well. Although there is no #1 horror movie my 2 favorites are Exorcist and TCM.... the new REMAKE of TCM was better than the other poor attempts at a sequel but it still didnt come close to living up to the original! I have always laughed hearing about how people were so scared they had to cover they're eyes the whole time, come on...nothing you will ever see in a movie is that scary.

#79 — October 31, 2003 @ 21:12PM — Kayelle

I'm sorry but i think Strangeland is by FAR the most disturbing movie ever... all the S&M in that movie is just PSYCHO...... plus the whole internet theme.... DAMN SCARY!

I think we are all forgetting the scariest movie of all time...

Kazam. with shaquiel o'neil?

scared the bejesus out of me.

#81 — November 1, 2003 @ 04:08AM — Marvin

As a kid I watched "The Thing". No, my parents didn't make me watch it, it just got mixed with my cartoons or something, and I ended up watching the whole movie. This was scary for me before AND after the movie... you know, when it's dark you're in your bed and you use Santa Claus to block out memories of scenes from the movie. As an adult though, sadly, I haven't seen a movie that made me think of it AFTER the movie and still feel scared. Sure, movies can make you feel tense and jittery at the moment but I'm looking for something that, well, makes you feel like "a scared kid at night" (even just one night - right after the movie). Then I hear from everyone about the scariest movie of all time, "The Exorcist". As far as scary goes... HUGE disapointment. It had freaky stuff, but not scary enough to make it in a top 50 list for scary movies IMO. (Not being scary doesn't mean it's crappy though.) There are still acclaimed scary movies I haven't seen, so I have hope, and my quest to become a scared adult continues...

#82 — November 2, 2003 @ 18:01PM — SMDragons

While I agree that all of the movies mentioned are scary in their own right and I have seen 90% of them. I believe that how terrifying a movie is depends on when you saw it. I saw Jaws when I was 5, Salems Lot 7 or 8, Friday the 13th and the Exorsist 11 or 12 but I just saw TCM for the first time yesterday and while I would not have been able to sleep for weeks if I saw it when I was a kid it had no lasting effect on me as an adult. The first Aliens should have made the list for the alien birth stomach scene alone.
I find movies like Seven and Silence of the Lambs (while not classic horror) are truly disturbing enough to take the place of the classic horror film for an adult frame of mind.

#83 — November 3, 2003 @ 15:18PM — cheeks1128

I have to say for me personally (I'm 32 years old) my top twelve scary movies are (in no particular order)

Friday the 13th
Gates of Hell
The Shining
The Hearse
Salem's Lot
Halloween
Ghost Story
The Changeling
The Pit and the Pendulum
The Exorcist
The Amityville Horror
The Omen

#84 — November 3, 2003 @ 15:24PM — cheeks1128

Oh...sorry...If I were to name a 13th scary movie in my arsenal, it would
have to be Picnic at Hanging Rock...
Don't ask me why, I haven't seen it in 15 years or so, but I remember the atmosphere of this movie being REALLY CREEPY.

#85 — November 3, 2003 @ 15:26PM — Adele [URL]

Sure, some spinechilling movies mentioned here, but you've all left out the most truly haunting, terrifying one of all- an Austrian movie from Michael Haneke called "Funny Games."

If you want to be scared, see it.

But take heed, it is definitely not for those of a nervous/sensitive disposition.

#86 — November 3, 2003 @ 17:19PM — Uncle Bob [URL]

I think it depends on when and where you see the film too. I've seen movies in theaters full of screaming teenage girls ("The Funhouse") that were pretty lame while watching them at home on a Sunday afternoon.

That said ... the only movie that ever made me sleep with the lights on was "The Evil Dead".

"The Exorcist" scared the crap out of me at age 15 in a crowded, screaming theater.

"The Hitcher" is a great psychological thriller.

"The Shining" was so creepy, I saw it on four consecutive nights in the theater.

"Return of The Living Dead" is a great mix of horror and humor.

I prefer "Dawn of the Dead" to "Night Of The Living Dead".

"Prince of Darkness" was kinda creepy.

"Joy Ride" is unnerving every time you hear that guy's voice on the CB radio.

When I saw "Halloween" in the theater in 1978, the theater had hooked up strobe lights which went off during the showdown between Jamie Lee Curtis and Michael Myers and they stayed on for 15 minutes. That really added to the experience.

I haven't seen it in years and remember it being pretty amusing, but wasn't "Fright Night" a pretty scary flick?

One of the scariest movies I've ever seen is the 1963 version of "The Haunting." Believe me, if you've never seen it, you're in for a real scaretreat.. Hill House is a place that will give you the creeps.. There's no blood and no gore, you have to use your imagination. The movie starts with a history of Hill House, and right there you're hooked.. Trust me, you'll love it.. If you like to be scared, that is.

#91 — November 13, 2003 @ 09:14AM — Gary W Craig

By the way, don't waste your time or money on the 1999 remake of "The Haunting." It was not scary, and it's pretty much rubbish. I just purchased a DVD of the original movie and am anxiously awaiting its arrival.. How scary is this movie? Last month my fiancee and I were watching it, and I had to leave for work and she wouldn't watch the rest of it alone.. How's that? This from a woman who's a volunteer firefighter and paramedic.. Sorry, I didn't mean to be so longwinded about this movie.. I don't understand how it's not on many of the top 10 lists for scary movies.

#92 — November 13, 2003 @ 17:20PM — Shawn

I'd Say The Top 5 Movies to scare me Were:
1. Halloween (I saw when I was 10 the mask and score were priceless)
2. The Ring (I'm not going classic style like most but I actually was very scared seeing this movie in theaters)
3. Nightmare on Elm Street (Nancy... Nancy... Save Me From... FREDDY)
4. Pet Semetary/IT (very good and frightening Stephen King films)
5. Texas Chainsaw Massacre (2003) (This remake was very well done Leatherface is awesome!)
Anyways Those who want to criticize my list go for it but it's my personal list and I honestly felt those movies were very scary.

#93 — November 13, 2003 @ 17:28PM — Eric Olsen

thanks to you all, lots of great comments, and like Shawn said, it's what's scary to YOU that counts

Well, my eyes are hurting of soo much reading....But I have to say a couple of things, some will agree and some won't. First of all... I have to agree with the people that say that The Exorcist is the one of the greatest horror movies ever made. The Ring wasn't. It was ok. NOt the scariest. One thing I couldn't believe was not seeing Poltergeist in any of the 90 something comments posted. That movie was great!! Not only was the movie scary as hell, but the little girl died in the making of the trilogy of this movie. Not only did she die but also 3 or 4 other people who stared in it too. Child's Play was good when I was a child obviously scary then. Carrie was also an awesome movie. Pet Sematary was such a good movie also. TCM was scary as hell also. Kujo was a dog lover's nightmare. You gotta love The Omen. The Exorcist III. There are just soo many I can't think of them all right now.

#95 — November 15, 2003 @ 23:21PM — Mauricio

COME ONE there's a movie that noone has mentioned and it's one of the most scary movies about haunted "houses" (it's a lunatic assylum..) it's... HOUSE ON HAUNTED HILL (the new one, not the old one).. there's alos a worth seen sequel "A Nightmare On Elm Street"(all of'em) and for those out there reading this... THE RING WASN'T SCARY AT ALL (maybe a little part when the girl come's out of the tv) and believe me, i'm not just another fan of scary movies, i've got 45 DVDs all about scary movies...and keep collecting

#96 — November 15, 2003 @ 23:24PM — Mauricio

I have been getting word that many of my books that have made it on to the "big screen" have made it to many people's lists so I came to check it out. I thank those of you who said "it" was very scary but I am very dissapointed for the fact that no one has put "Storm of the century" down on the list. I dont know if it is because you people didn't have time to watch a 6 hour movie or what but you should go see it. P.S. Go see my latest film, Dreamcatcher

#102 — December 2, 2003 @ 23:43PM — Craig Lyndall [URL]

Dreamcatcher was kind of cool in spots and any Kevin Smith fan knows how great Jason Lee is, but I am pretty sure it doesn't belong on the scariest movies list Mr. King.

#103 — December 4, 2003 @ 01:10AM — Rajat

Whew !! finally finished reading the entire blog.

Good discussion and plenty of pointers to more movies I gotta see. One thing is for sure - "One person's scare, may very well be another person's amusement"

I personally prefer the psychological terror movies and grew out of Nightmare On Elm Street, Texas... and other gore types.

If you notice a typical scary scene has a deep bass sound building up before it happens. People who have become accustomed to such scenes miss out on the scare (I belong to that category).

I personally like movies with a really scary concept or sideplot. One such movie that left an impression on my mind was - Jacob's Ladder

i saw THE RING when i was 12 and it only scared me the first day i saw it. Mainly because friends before me had seen it already and were making it seem 10 times scarier than the exorcist. So i went into the movie theatre all worked up like i was gonna see something soooooo scary when really it was nothing. i bought it on DVD because the plot and story was i thougt quite good but now i can watch it alone in a dark room laughing my ass off at how stupid the special effects are. i also was scared the first time i saw DARKNESS FALLS in a dark movie thearte. i saw it opening night with a bunch of friends who were all scared sh*tless. i have to admit that that night i did sleep with the light on but it now is the most retarted movie ever created. i mean come on! a tooth fairy that kills you?? god how low will movie producers go! i saw THE TEXAS CHAINSAW MASSACRE on opening night also and i was so scared! all my friends and i were hugginh each other! haha so THE TEXAS CHAINSAW MASSACRE was the scariest movie i've ever seen...so far!
- allie, 13

P.S. NIGHTMARE ON ELM STREET the 1st one was good and it scared me the first time i saw it. seriously... a girl whose dreaming gets cut up and dragged up on a wall! scary! but i', not scared of it now

#110 — December 18, 2003 @ 10:52AM — ashley

i'm 13 and i LOVE horror flicks. the ring sucked. scary the 1st time u see it. only thing i thought was a lil scary was when u see the girl in the closet. darkness falls also scary first time u see it but now the special affects are gay. texas chainsaw masscre (remake) was absolutely great! it had me covering my eyes and looking through the holes cuz i couldnt stop watchubg it. i plan on watching the exorcist. i started watching it one night when i was like, 9 but i stopped cuz i was a gay lil baby and i got scared when the girl was walkin down the stairs backwards or whatever. im trying my best to get my hands on it so i can watch it again. it looks really really good. i saw some of the jasons and there PATHETIC. totaly stupid and unbelieveable. i mean he gets frozen in space??? come on. nightmare on elm street had an excellent plot line and everything but still not "pee-your-pants scary". if anyone has any suggestions on really scary movies that are comin up please post them here.

GOTHICA was suspensful but still i was laughing in the movie theatre with my friends at how fake everything looked. if ur scared of the ring ur a big-ass baby

The scariesttttttttttt movie hands down is THE EVIL DEAD. I remember watching it at the movies and i couldnt sleep that night.. Also the exorcist is real scaryyyy. THE THING was a scary movie too. Also DEMONS 1 and 2.

Check out "Carnival of Souls" if you're into seriously "creepy".

#113 — January 2, 2004 @ 16:36PM — Carol

There are two movies that scared me enough that I was literally "weak in the knees" - one was "Play Misty for Me" - although not exactly a "horror" or "monster" flick, the stalking psycho is excellent, and the timing of the movie is perfect (don't even consider watching it on TV, you have to see it straight through) - just when you are lulled into calm for a moment, BAM! And there's no drum roll build-up to set it up. The other one, which I probably saw 30 years ago was, I think, "Zodiac Killer" about a serial killer who shot people parked in lover's lanes and such - he had a small flashlight taped to his gun so he could hit you right in the heart, and his victims were totally random. I saw it at the drive-in and was too scared to get out of the car for popcorn, and kept sinking lower and lower into the seat under my blanket!

The all time scariest ever??? That would
beyond the shadow of a doubt have to be,
"Perfect" starring Jamie Lee Curtis and
John Travolta. Travolta aerobicizing in

Honorable Mention Department: This would
go to:"Teahouse Of The August Moon". In
which Maron Brando plays an Asian.Scary
kids,really truly scary.

I have to agree with Cindy "THE HAUNTING" is the all-time best horror flick. What made it so frightening is that it played on your imagination. You never actually see a ghost, but the inference is incredibly powerful. That is something we can all relate to because most of us have never seen actually a ghost but we have all thought we might have seen one. Second would have to go to "THE EXORCIST" because of its spiritual nature that plays on our primordial fear of the devil and possession. Who of us hasn't at least wondered if we might be possessed after seeing that?

#116 — January 3, 2004 @ 07:52AM — Sarah e.g.

I really liked Ringu. The Ring wasn't a bad remake, and it actually was better in parts (inside the well), but Ringu really emphasised a misty, desolate otherworldness. One of my favorite scenes was the girl's mother sitting on the rocky beach, watching the sea. Who or what was she waiting for? Horrifying.

One night, I was lying in bed, in total darkness, trying to get to sleep. I remembered, suddenly, that it was exactly a week since I'd seen Ringu. Just then, my computer monitor flickered on, filling the room with a blue glow. Then I realised I'd bumped the mouse with my pillow a few seconds earlier.

Took me a little while longer to get to sleep.

#118 — January 17, 2004 @ 01:18AM — edgar

I'd say the scariest movie ive ever seen is the original version of The Ring, Ringu (it came out in Japan).

I was really dissapointed Ringu was remade for american audiences instead of subtitled. Anyone that saw the original will tell you that they removed the SCARIEST scene from the movie "the eye"..ringu fans..you know what im talkign about.

They also made the story a lot more simpler for "dumber" americans. The original movie had no references to "rings" or circles or anything of that nature. The only reason it was called Ringu was because it was referring to the passing on of the videotape to people (kind of like a ring).

The Ring = mediocre horror flick

Ringu = best ghost movie ever.

Oh yes.. I forgot about the original Texas Chainsaw Massacre. It is the only movie that I turned off the first time I saw it. It was filmed like a cheap home video which made it seem all the more realistic. Seeing people hung like cattle for the slaughter by a faceless lunatic with the constant, menacing buzz of the chainsaw was absolutely horrific to watch.

Ok...im tired of hearing about stupid movies like friday the 13th and nightmare of elm street. these are not scary and should be destroyed.

i like the exorcist but it wasnt terrifying.

i recommend Suspiria..its an italian movie that will undoubtedly be the weirdest movie you will ever see.

The original Haunting was also good.

and i saw the ring on opening night in this empty theatre that was closing down in a few weeks. only 3 other people were in there and i thought it was pretty frightening in the theatre..after i saw it on hbo it wasnt the same though..so dont say it isnt scary if you havent seen it in the movies..

but rent SUSPIRIA...

#123 — February 10, 2004 @ 18:29PM — kevin

hmmmm yes i agree on the fact that the ring was sortof scary the first time i seen it alone but as the months went by and it came out on dvd i bought it jus to review the scene when she comes out of the tv set.....but a was afraid that i wasnt scared or shocked at all its kindof corny when u see it up close...for me one of the best horror movies of all times happens to be the dawn of the dead it is a movie filled with suspence which i loved about it...it is not a vert FRIGHTENING movie but it is still very very entertaining to watch i just hope the new version coming this year can atleast relate to the original

I'm back with my new and much better top 10 greatest horror movies list.....

1.The Exorcist
2.Halloween
3.The Shining
4.Psycho (1960)
5.A Nightmare on Elm Street
6.The Sixth Sense
7.Texas Chainsaw Massacre
8.Carrie
9.Suspiria
10.The Blair Witch Project

I'm sick and tired of people giving The Blair Witch Project a hard time. This movie did something that no other horror movie has done, and they made it work.

As for The Sixth Sense, a lot of people like it but there's some that think its not that scary or that it sucks. I got it at # 6 on my list cause it scared me more than any other movie ive seen before and anyways it is the # 1 Thriller of all time. If you don't believe me then read the cover of the movie.

#126 — February 15, 2004 @ 05:25AM — Paul Anacker, JD

Hello Ladies & Gentlemen (and I use that term loosely, except for Mr. King)!

I've read all your comments and picks for scariest movie. I've seen them all and the only 2 that ever even gave me more than a twinge up my spine were the original Haunting and The Changeling (with George C. Scott). However, no one has mentioned a movie that truly scared me. It was a Vincent Price movie from the 50's. I'm 54, so that probably gives me an advantage.

The name of the movie was "The Tingler." It was another of the films that William Castle did with Vincent Price. I believe House on a Haunted Hill and Thirteen Ghosts (both a bit eerie / scary) were others. The Tingler had the eerieness of the Changeling, but with scarier scenes. I'll give you a quick synopsis, as I remember it.

See if you can picture this in your mind. Vincent Price plays an MD researcher who believes when a person is scared another entity is formed, running up the person's spine. He calls the entity the Tingler. He manages to get subjects on his operating table and scare them so he can get xrays of the Tingler. However, when a person screams in reaction to the fear, then the Tingler disappears, so he can only see the xrays. The good doctor needs to find a way to keep the Tingler living longer.

Enter the Dr.'s friend, who owns a movie theater. The friend and his wife live in an apartment above the movie theater. The wife is a deaf-mute. So, she can not speak and cannot scream. Out of respect for his wife, the husband only plays silent films at his theater.

The Dr. sees the wife faint after she sees her husband bleed when he accidentally cuts his finger slightly, so the Dr. knows she is afraid of blood. Aha! One night when the wife is home alone getting ready for bed someone arranges very eerie and scary bloody things to happen to her. This is a scary part of the movie (but not the scariest). The audience takes on the part of the wife and like her, cannot scream, so the tension mounts. The wife is scared to death!

The husband finds his wife and takes the woman to the Dr., who puts her on his operating tables and cuts out the still living Tingler from her spine. It looked like a slimey giant pulsating reddish brown silverfish, with antennae and many tentacle-like legs.

Of course, the Tingler gets loose. You get glimpses of it scurrying all around. It attacks people by latching onto their neck or spine. The only way to get it off is to scream! That night, it goes back to the movie theatre that is underneath the dead woman's apartment. People are in the theatre watching a film. You see the Tingler climbing up the back of someone's seat -- is it your seat? It still gives me shivers thinking about this movie. None of the other movies mentioned does that.

Even though The Tingler was a campy b-movie with mediocre acting and dialog, it was very scary. William Castle used many psychological techniques to involve the audience in his films. Directors of today might want to disect his films to see what they could use in modern movies, instead of merely relying on special effects. Of course, if they want even more ideas for scary, they should contact me. I'm available for creative consultation.

But speaking of special effects, did I forget to mention one thing? Some seats in the real movie theater in which people were watching The Tingler had electric zappers built into them! When those were set off, people were getting up screaming and running from the theater. And then the "follow-the-crowd" mentality of most people took over and caused the whole audience to go screaming out of the theater.

But the theaters had to stop using the zappers because people were getting hurt by the crowds running out of the theaters. Does anyone know of any other movie that was so scary it had whole audiences running to get out of the theater? Neither the Haunting, the Changeling, the Excorist, nor any of the other films mentioned ever did that!

Now you know SCARY!

The movie is out on DVD. I doubt it could cause the same scare when watched on a TV set, even a wide-screen, but who knows. Line up a dozen or so theater-like chairs in front of a 54" Plasma TV with some good speakers and invite a dozen friends over for a viewing. Turn down the lights and roll the movie. Don't let anyone talk or interrupt for popcorn, the bathroom, etc. See what reaction your audience has.

Want to be even more playful? Rig some remote controlled zappers in the backs of the chairs!
{8^O . . . Of course, if someone has a heart attack, or otherwise gets injured, and sues your ass, don't blame me; I was only making a joking suggestion, you're the one who did it!

#127 — February 15, 2004 @ 06:30AM — Chris Kent

"The Tingler" was always one of my fav horror films as a kid. I remembering watching it when I had a group of friends over spending the night. If memory serves, the film was in black and white, but when a bath tub fills up with blood, the scene is shown in color. That William Castle - he's a real lulu!

Joe Dante made a very good film partially based on Castle's life "Matinee," with John Goodman in the lead role. "The Tingler" FX you mention are referenced in that film.

I have to disagree with your list.

#142 — March 6, 2004 @ 22:37PM — Anthony g

I'm a little dissapointed with some of the comments.

To know a scary movie is to take on the mindstate of the characters... Once one tells themselves that its only a movie then the funs lost and you don't know scary. I guess you can say that's their shortcut to thinking. That to me says you don't like to be SCARED. To appreciate a scary movie is to live through the characters and experience what they're going through. Sound effects play a big role in scary movies. Halloween 6 the origin of micheal myers: My opinion the sound effects played a big role in making the movie what it is. Event Horizion does this well also. The scene when there reviewing the last transimisson from the previous crew and what the doctor makes out of it is Latin (Save yourselves from Hell). Not knowing a different language can make a scary movie more interesting. The Exorcist did a good job as well "nooneami, dogmorfemoci, say etc". Talking backwards in a demonic voice can be frighting. I t'nod tnaw ot eorb enoyna eromyna os sereh ym choices I recommended

Priness of Darkness

Day of the dead, Dawn of the dead

In to the woods (Evil dead prequel)

I HAVENT SEEN ALL THE MOVIES FROM THE TOP 10, BUT I AGREE WITH SOME OF THEM BEING ON THE TOP 10. MAYBE, NOT IN THAT ORDER. I HAVE A COMMENT AND A QUESTION. MY FAVORITE ALL TIME HORROR MOVIE IS TEXAS CHAINSAW. IM VERY BIAS BECAUSE I GREW UP IN TEXAS THOUGH. AND MY BROTHER CONVINCED ME IT WAS A TRUE STORY WHEN I WAS 8 YRS OLD. NOW, MY QUESTION IS, DOES ANYONE OUT THERE KNOW OR HAVE SEEN A HORROR MOVIE I SAW WHEN I WAS ABOUT 7 YRS OLD. IT LOOKED ITALIAN, BUT IM NOT SURE. THE MOVIE CONTAINS A GIRL BEING WHIPPED WITH THORNED ROSES IN THE BEGINNING. IT GETS WORST THOUGH, SOMETIME ALONG THE WAY THE GIRL IS PAINTAING AND THERE IS A GIANT CRUCIFIX WERE SHES AT AND ALL OF A SUDDEN THE CHRIST ON THE CROSS AWAKENS AND RAISES FROM THE CROSS AND REPEADETLY RAPES HER THROUGHOUT MOVIE. SHE BECOMES AFRAID OF CROSSES AND IT SEEMS LIKE SHE EITHER GOES CRAZY OR BECOMES POSSESED. ANOTHER PART OF THE MOVIE HAS A MAN WHIPPING HIMSELF ON THE BACK AND THEN GOING TO SAVE THE GIRL. I DONT KNOW NAME, DATE, OR ORIGIN OF MOVIE. I WANT TO SEE IT AGAIN TO SEE IF IT WAS REALLY SCARY OR WAS IT THAT I WAS A KID AND EASILY SCARED. IF ANYONE KNOWS THIS MOVIE, PLS LET ME KNOW AND I WILL BE VERY GRATEFUL. (OH, BY THE WAY, THE NEW TEXAS CHAINSAW MASSACRE WAS NOT A DISSAPOINTMENT IF YOU JUST FORGET ABOUT THE FIRST ONE AND RELAX, AND TRY TO ENJOY IT, DONT RELAX TOO MUCH BECAUSE IT SCARED THE S**T OUT OF ME.) THANK YOU

I don't have a comment, just a question. Is The Texas Chainsaw Masacre a true story?

no

#159 — April 9, 2004 @ 18:48PM — felch [URL]

Pretty good list Eric. However I would have to include the original Dawn of the Dead ( my fave ) and a short film called "Cutting Moments." The latter being about the most horrific twenty minutes in cinema. Perhaps only the two notorious scenes in Irreversible come close. Of course there are countless gory z grade films that are disturbing yet too terribly inept to count ( Last House on Dead End Street, anything by Ruggero Deodato, Joe D'Amato and Lucio Fulci ). However there is an argument for the original Toxic Avenger isn't there?

#160 — April 9, 2004 @ 19:21PM — Sandra Smallson

The only movie that scared me on your list was The Exorcist. I would add OMEN, Dracula and Zombie The Flesh Eaters to my list. ..OH..and CANDYMAN.

OK FIRST OFF HOUSE OF 1000 CORPSES WAS A STUPID MOVE THERE WAS NOTHING BUT GORE. WOW SCARY OOOOH!!!! ITS FORBIDDEN IN THE USA BECAUSE IT MADE PEOPLE DIE FROM SEEING IT AND IT MADE PEOPLE SO SCARED THEY KILLED THEMSELVES BECAUSE THEY DIDNT WANT TO BE SCARED ANYMORE. WARNING WARNING WARNING IM NOT TELLING YOU PEOPLE TO SEE IT PLEASE DONT LET YOUNGER KIDS TO SEE IT IT WILL TERRIFY THEM FOREVER. yOU CAN ONLY GET IT FROM OTHER COUNTRIES ...................................THE PLOT GOES LIKE THIS ...................A MAN THAT WAS WALKING IN THE WOODS IN OMISH TERRITORY FINDS A CASSETTE TAPE ON THE GROUND IN THE MIDDLE OF NOWHERE GOES BACK TO HIS CAR PUTS IT IN HIS STEREO. IT AND ORDINARY TAPE NO MARKINGS NO NOTHING AND HEARS THE VOICE OF THE DEVIL HIMSELF AND HE SAYS THAT HIS REAL NAME WAS HOMIGOTI OR SOMESTUPID NAME AND HE EXPLAINS HIS HISTORY ON THAT TAPE AND ............................................WATCH THE MOVIE TO SEE THE REST

Lisa asked if 'Texas Chainsaw Massacre' is a true story. Actually, it's half-true.
It's loosely based on the demented killer Ed Gein, quite possibly the most insane person that ever lived. The character of Leatherface was based on him. Some of it is true and some of it isn't. For example, Ed Gein really DID wear a mask made of human skin, but he didn't use a chainsaw. And yes, he was a cannibalistic madman, just like Leatherface.

Visitor Q is a pretty freaky movie, more creepy and disturbing than horror style scary though. Also gotta give a mention to the ol' Faces of Death and Traces of Death series, doesn't get much scarier than that. Oh yeah, and Exorcist 3, almost as good as the first one.

#169 — April 17, 2004 @ 06:48AM — Laura [URL]

the general subject of most of these comments seems to be whether or not The Ring is scary.

it isn't.

fair enough, it is freaky and could mess with someones head. but it doesn't deserve to be called scary.

Carrie. now that is some scary shit. specially the end scene. with the hand. not nice.

The Haunting, the original. didn't exactly keep me awake at night, but scared me in the short term.

Lord Of Illusions. different approach than most horror films. still very good.

Rosemary's Baby. scared the shit out of me the first time. second time, seemed kinda mild.

The Shining. omigosh. freaky.

Halloween. a perfect horror movie. scary. unpredictable. and a killer that can't be killed.

#170 — April 19, 2004 @ 11:36AM — Tim Dog

Ok. I'm going to throw a couple of things out to get some response. Jeepers Creepers??? Come on. The sequel was a little better...but not much. The Ring...spooky...not scary. Now everone has thier "thing" that scares them. Clowns, Spooky music, Zombies, Possesion, etc. My vice is reflections. Mirrors, water, glass whatever. Keeping this in mind, don't laugh, I think that Poltergiest 3 is pretty scary. Makes the hair on the back of your neck stand up for sure!
Overall though...one of the best scary movies has to be a movie called.... "The Ugly" Psyco-killer with a GREAT ending for a horror flick. Just my 2 cents.

#171 — April 19, 2004 @ 12:21PM — Laura Amos [URL]

I will have to vote for the Mothman Prophecies as well for scariest, mostly because it is supposed to have some truth to it. And it's based in Ohio where I live :| I'm a grown woman and I still have nightmares. Blair Witch would have been scary if we still thought it was real. Come on, all of you who said The Ring wasn't scary, you can't tell me you wouldn't of shit your pants if your phone rang as you were watching it!

#172 — April 19, 2004 @ 15:45PM — Antfreeze

I saw a movie as a youngster called "the legend of bogey ridge" or something like that. It pre-dated by 20 years or so the blair witch thing of pretending to be a real life documentary about big foot. It was pretty scary but the theater was filled with a thousand shrieking little girlies that were really bugging me so when I detected the monster was about to re-appear and cause them all to cut loose again I had my fingers up an inch from my ears, all set to plug them. Sure enough out jumped bigfoot, the audience screamed bloody murder and I tried completely in vain to hit my ear holes with my two wildly shaking fingers.

I've read a lot of the posts here and not yet seen 'the eye' mentioned. it might not be the scariest but it should at least be considered to be up there somewhere.

it's from japan but even with the subtitles the movie is still disturbing and the ending makes your jaw drop.

agree with almost all, esp. Nightmare on Elm Street. That shitte is mad scary, and the whole concept of dreams being real and being able to reach us in our waking life is a good one -- . And i think Rosemary's Baby is really great too -- i don't know about this woman and her shoe, but if i hear of anything i'll be sure to post... Sounds very weird, but kinda funny.

Yes, too, Texas Chainsaw Massacre scared the hell outta me too... the old version though; havenj't seen the latest, though don't want to, as i'm sure it will be too much for me and theni'll start hearing creepy noises all over the place, which is NOT a good thing when one is trying to pee and develops mega-shy bladder from being spooked.
