Colin Hay - Going Somewhere
Published October 14, 2002
Show me that there can still be some mystery
I haven’t found
Throw me a lifeline to the lost at sea
Don’t let me drown
To match the almost quite desperation of the song, Colin’s voice has an edge to it. He reaches out to the listener, pleading for that lifeline. The song ends with that plea hanging in the air.
If you think Colin is only capable of folk songs and lullabies tracks three and ten show he can still jam. They are the songs that most match the Men at Work sound but the solo guitar work gives them a great acoustic sound – “Men at Work Unplugged.” To prove that he can handle the stage all by himself, COlin ends the album with a live vocals only track that has an almost middle eastern funeral dirge sense to it. It is amazing what emotion and rhythym he can communicate with just his voice. This is the singer virtually naked on stage with just the words and his voice between him and his audience.
I don't feel as if this short review has done the album justice. It is very difficult to communicate the power, emotion, and beauty of the songs without having you listen to them. But I would say if you enjoy acoustic guitar and singer songwriters or if you like folk/alternative type music that you should check this album out. There is something compelling and raw about listening to just a man and his guitar. It brings the lyrics and the music up close and personal in a way that a full band simply can’t match. Colin Hay’s voice and guitar are up to the challenge of the spotlight and the solitary stage. If you want to get away from the saccharine, shallow, and mindless pop music of much of today’s top forty I recommend you check out Colin Hay. I am glad I did.

Kevin,
Great review! I was blown away by Colin's appearance on Scrubs. I intend to buy the album too, mostly because of that performance!
It sounded so cool acoustically! I was a fan of Men at Work, but tired of them after the '80's. I love Colin solo though! It was a nice surprise!
I tried to book Colin into a Dallas venue, but he wanted $12,000 to do it. Maybe next time!
At first you write it correctly - "my brilliant feat", but then you write "my brilliant feet".
Just listened to going somewhere and it was utterley astounding. seen men at work in the apollo theatre in glasgow when just 17 years of age and have craved a second serving ever since. This album has relit a longing to witness the man at work again. When will Mr Hay display his talents in Glasgow again? for yesterday is not soon enough.
This review is dead on. I did exactly the same thing. I saw Colin on scrubs, recognized the voice, but couldn't put 2 and 2 together. When I finally figured out who it was I had to have that CD. Now I can't stop listening to it. His voice is amazing, his lyrics, are just plain real, and its a must buy.
Colin is truly an amazing singer. Glad you also like him. That review is 100% correct. You should really check out a few of his other albums also especially "Company of Strangers" and if you want to hear him sing his Men at Work songs solo check out the album "Men at Work" (quite a creative title isn't it?).

What a pleasant surprise - thanks Kevin!
