Norma Jean - Bless the Martyr & Kiss the Child

Written by Seth Werkheiser

Oh my... the new Norma Jean, "BLESS THE MARTYR, KISS THE CHILD", is going to blow your face off. There are some parts that remind me of the first Tooth and Nail release from Zao. What was the name of that? The Splinter shards the Girth of a Generation or something like that? Regardless, some of this new album reminds me of the feel of that album, very raw and energetic... almost like you can close your eyes and see these guys playing this live.

NORMA JEAN is definitly one of the better ones out there. They get better recording wise every time i hear something and definitly always great live.

This is one of the best albums I've ever heard. I have a girlfriend who used to hate hardcore or anything with any loud vocals. Now, because of Norma-Jean's new album, she loves and listens to hardcore in her regular day's routine. I can't say enough about this album. It's amazing.

Norma Jean is sweet. I saw them live a few months ago soon after their album release and I'm goin to see them again in a few days. They are the baddest live show I have ever been to. I got a hairline fracture in my face at that concert. The moshpit was nuts. I can't wait to go break my face again.

#13 — April 13, 2003 @ 00:08AM — Craig [URL]

Norma Jean is the greatest hardcore band I have ever heard. Scoggins vocals and everything that follows mixes together beautifully. Bless the Marytr Kiss the Child was wonderfully put together and is a great example of Christian people getting together and making music that isn't SUGARCOATED! ex: Reliant K, Supertones, and the infamous DC Talk. I mean... Scoggin say's it best "Christ is not a fasion, fleeting away." I am so glad I found these guys. I am looking foreward to their show at cornerstone. Peace. Unity.

#14 — May 16, 2003 @ 14:00PM — jeff

WOW! i mean what more can i say? what more could a hardcore fan ask for?

Yes, Norma Jean crushes all. No, Norma Jean is NOT a "Christian band." They are simply Christians in a band. That should be of no consequence anyhow.

Anyways, Norma Jean crushes all. BTMKTC is one of the greatest records of our time. Go buy it!

#20 — August 6, 2003 @ 12:36PM — core christian

I disagree with ryan i think norma jean is more than just christians in a band because in all of there songs they have a christian meaning take the shotgun message for example that is all about the crucifiction of Jesus. so i belive they are a very "christian band" but that makes them 50 time better

core christian

#36 — November 6, 2003 @ 13:57PM — exgratia

Norma Jean's album Bless the Martyr, Kiss the Child is easily one of the greatest technical hardcore/metalcore albums to date...but they lost it all when they lost their original singer and bass player. I saw them at Cornerstone of 2002 with all original members, and they were freakin' incredible. Amazing. Now, they suck live. They cannot play worth anything and their new vocalist is such a horrible screamer it's ridiculous. I refuse to see them live anymore, because they disappointed me twice. None of the guitar players can hit the notes nearly at all, and the new bassist is just piss-poor. I sure hope they get their act together, cause their album is so good. If you want an incredible technical hardcore band with the aggression of Norma Jean, that can actually pull it off live, look at The Dillinger Escape Plan, or Every Time I Die...amazing.

You guys are blind and lame. All you do is repeat the same thing over and over again. "Norma Jean is the best band ever." Sheesh, there are other bands out there in the same genre as Norma
Jean, and even, *gasp* put on a better show than they do. You all really need to wake up and take off your blinders. Go find some other bands to praise. GEEZ.

#40 — January 16, 2004 @ 00:13AM — bob

I was just at the solid state record tour-Oh man. The bands on that lable are amazing, but Norma Jean is definitly the best of them. They put on a great live show, and their cd is one of the better hardcore cds out there- best christian hardcore by far. They've got a new cd coming out this november, it's something you all are gunna wanna check out.

#55 — April 1, 2004 @ 08:36AM — Melissa

Norma Jean will blow your pants off,I had the privelidge of watching last night in Detroit and my life is forever altered,I feel as though I am ready to die for nothing in my life could be better than the experience I have just recieved. I have seen my share of shows and I can always tell myself that they are decent or great shows but now,the comparison that any show I see from now on has in comparison to that past show with Norma Jean such rough competition that they might as well all throw down their guitars and drumsticks right now! I advice anyone and everyone to check em out,u will never be the same, and any fan of any type of music can respect what these fellows do. And on top of it they are all really great guys,I had the chance to speak with their drummer and their new vocalist and wow!

#56 — April 7, 2004 @ 19:58PM — Victor

Norma Jean is definetly my fav hardcore band...i get all my influence on lead guitar from them...they just play their stuff and dont sugar coat the lead like Metallica, not saying Metallica suck tho....they cool...

I understand that most of Norma Jean's fan are young, and this is what I'd excepted to read. I was not impressed by them or you, but like to say, most of you seem to be drug free and I think that's great. If Christ is not a fashion than why do you all mostly wear black? What is the purpose of Norma Jean? How are they or you making the world a better place? I would hope that you'd be inspired by other things also, then a band that seems to be some kind of cult. Spending I would imagine hours trying to figure out what the heck they are screaming at you. Christ shouldn't have to be pounded into your head while your just about pounding each other. Please go out and love your neighbor the ones who has no idea who Norma Jean are. Hardcore is not my favorite kind of music and have listened to it for over 20 years, although just because Christ is mentioned doesn't want me to think it's any better now.

Christian or not, NJ are a damn good band, and I am a sXe follower and a hardcore listener, i own about 3 black items of clothing, I wear 1. They aren't changing the world, they aren't trying to, they aren't forcing christ into people, it's peoples own choice what they take from the music. I take the raw hardcore energy and I am very impressed by their (ex)singers vocal talent, being a vocalist myself, the ability to scream like that through a whole song isn't as easy as some people believe. We don't care if you are impressed or not. We care about our music, and what it means to each of us as an individual. Go listen to Dashboard you Emo Fuck.

I have been listening to NJ since "Bless the Martyr, Kiss the Child" came out. Just seconds ago, I found out they were Christian. I am a fan of theirs not because of their views, but because they are artists. They have taken hardcore to a new level and I appreciate them for that simple reason. I also think the lyrics are beautiful, and can be appreciated alone as poetry, as well as kicking ass with the music. Oh, they were also a band called Luti-Kriss, and have more music out under that name. Check it out.

Norma Jean put on a great show in Indianapolis. I could've seriously, seriously done without the whole light effects though. What's the point in SEEING the band if you can't even see them? Plus, it's crazy as heck trying to dance at all in the pit. You can't see a single thing that's going on. So many people got kicked in the face and trampled.

The Solid State tour was completely amazing all together. Haste the Day, finally back in their home town, got an amazing welcome back, and the show was freaking awesome. Besides my friend Chris almost being knocked out from some freaking dumb stage crew guy pushing him back into the crowd, Haste the Day stopped playing and focused on whatever medical attention he needed. Dead Poetic did a great job, Underoath was amazing, and Beloved was freaking awesome.

Bless the Martyr and Kiss the Child is one of the best investments I've ever made. It's one of the best cds I own right now. I still miss their old singer!! But I'm glad they got rid of that other guy that sounded like crap live. This new guy is great, he's doing a really good job. Norma Jean is a completely all around awesome band with a great message...and definitely looking forward to their next show.

Lets not be too critical. At the same time, lets not be overly apathetic either. But I am 35 and know for a fact that HC has not been around for 20 yrs. Original HC which is basically a more agressive Punk is maybe 17 yrs. give or take a year. HC/Metal came a year or two after that. If you are as old as you say are, you will remember that music means alot more to a young adult or is taken alot more seriously, teetering on idolatry. But most of us grow out of it when our priorities get into order with maturation. I still totally dig the genre, but now I enjoy many other types of music as well. Norma Jean probably bothers you as much as Country Western does me. But I don't go posting on thier forums accusing them of being inbred cow tippers.
Your point is probably valid to some percentage of these kids, but I seriously doubt it's the majority. And clothing color has nothing to do with ones walk with Christ. I would not claim that N.J. is "making the world a better place" but they are Christ centered alternative to much of what is out there in the scene.
Anyways I can go on, but I think I made my point. God bless.

I have the Norma Jean album, and I was all happy that a new band would come out with an almost new sound. It completly blew me away with all of the different sounds they threw together. Then I found out that they "might" be a christrian hardcore band. I refuse to believe this because for me, and other non-christians, that love hardcore rock, that would simply ruin listening to them. Christian punk is the most contradicting phrase ever slapped together to label a group of people. Sure they may be christian, but do you have to ruin Norma Jean for all of us by saying they are a Christian rock band. P.S- god hates us all

i just read where someone was complaing about people calling norma jean christian and that we are ruining norma jean. it's only the truth. they are christian...obviously, you are not a true norma jean fan if you dont know that...just read the lyrics. especially the old stuff. 'Christ is not a fashoin, fleeting away.' and that's from the newest record. they are christian. read there lyrics.

One nation : under god

it doesn't matter what your religion is, we are all human frikkin beings under the sun and personally, I am jewish, but i am still an enormous fan of norma jean because they rock. when i found out they were christian; it did not change my view on them at all but it adds an interesting twist to their sound because most of the other christian bands I listen to are not nearly as heavy. bottom line: if you like powerful, original and tasteful riffs, brain-melting lyrics ( and song titles ;) all backed up by the immense power of Christ, then Norma Jean is for you. as a fan of rock/musician/performer/engineer and artist, I HIGHLY SUGGEST BUYING BTMKTC for the album artwork alone. ;) But even more importantly, the music is just incredible not just for a live-recorded album without computers but compared to anything i've heard in a while. most bands get that powerful guitar sound of today but layering dozens of guitars together but Norma Jeans packs the heat in a live environment just as efficiently so move over KoRn, you're days are over. If this is the future of rock, then I like where it's going. For those of you who already like NJ, ROCK ON!! ROOOOOOOAAAAAAAAAAARRRRRRR!!!
ps - if you DON'T like them, that's cool and all but first try playing "the whole world is counting on me. . " on a drumset, along with the cd ;) then get back to me on that one. . .

This is the best hardcore cd you could find. Best breakdowns you'll ever hear...guarenteed. I've seen them twice in concert and they put on a show let me tell ya. I saw the Chariot too and Josh Scogin is amazing in that band also. Cory Branden covers "Memphis will be Laid to Waste" perfectly at shows. They are my favorite band, and their concerts are like "BRINGING A KNIFE TO A GUNFIGHT!!!" yeah bitches.

who the hell cares if they're christian. stop thinking about their beliefs and just listen to the damn music. they are not a christian rock band, they are a hardcore band whose members are christian.do you guys actually ever listen to the music instead of the lyrics.

This band does not exemplify Christ in any way! Profanity is not of God and some of you use that language in your messages and some of you claim to be Christian. Christian is being Christ like and I don't see that in any of you and this band likewise. If they proclaim to be a Christian band, then they should exemplify Christ not look and act like the rest of worldly performers.

Brutal intensity, inspired lyrics, killer breakdowns, listen with an open mind, and you will find one of the most raw/hardcore albums produced. They have a style all their own, that has not been duplicated, unique and driven. This is purpose-filled music, and comes highly recommended - as well as Redeemer!
