Newstead & Voivod
Published September 19, 2002
From Blabbermouth:
The current incarnation of VOIVOD — vocalist Snake (a.k.a. Denis Belanger), guitarist Piggy (a.k.a. Denis D'Amour), drummer Away (a.k.a. Michel Langevin), and ex-METALLICA bassist Jason Newsted — will enter the final phase of pre-production for the group's much-anticipated comeback album on September 24th at Newsted's home studio in Walnut Creek, California. 13 songs (including one called "Gasmask") have been completed for the as-yet-untitled effort, according to Newsted, who will co-produce the record with Brian Dobbs (ECHOBRAIN, MANMADEGOD) beginning in mid-October. A tentative March 4th, 2003 release is planned. That's all well and good, but I've been able to find no info saying that Jason Newstead was out of EchoBrain. As far as I know, EchoBrain is the main reason he left Metallica. In related news, PAPA WHEELIE — the "stoner punk metal" crew consisting of Newsted (a.k.a. Jaylor) on guitar/vocals, Steven Wiig (a.k.a. Swiiglor) on drums and Joe Ledesma (a.k.a. Joefus) on bass — will be releasing their second album, Live Lycanthropy, this Halloween via Jason's Chophouse Records.
Also on the Newsted-related front, Jason's former band ECHOBRAIN will begin recording their sophomore album on September 16th at The Plant studios in Sausalito, California. An early 2003 release through Chophouse Records is expected.

OK, I've read the article which briefly references a mysterious interview:
In an interview with Mercury News, Newsted confirmed that he has indeed left EchoBrain and will be replaced by friend Adam.I did a search for Mercury News and ended up with a newspaper in San Francisco... but after searching that, I can find no interview or reference thereof with Jason Newstead.
I have no idea if this is fact or fiction, but something stinks of gossip....
Not exactly sure either, but here is the original Mercury News article:

OK, I stand corrected.... It certainly looks genuine...
I hope the next CD is as good without him, though.
Nice. Thanks for the tip. I'd stopped looking for new Voivod news when the whole Albini-produced thing collapsed last year. Nice that Snake's back, and now I'll have to look in again and see how the lawsuit is going.
Between this and Grohl's Voivod-inspired metal project, I'm ready to relieve my West Texas prog-metal heyday.
Snake is back? Too cool.
While I hope they continue to explore new sounds, I also hope that they do some stuff reminiscent of Dimension Hatross, NothingFace and maybe even Killing Technology. I love those damned albums.
Russ, I think Grohl's metal project is called Probot, but that might have changed.
Yeah, that's it, Brian. Couldn't remember the name. I do remember reading an interview with him quite a while back where he talked about putting up Voivod stickers for inspiration as he was writing/recording.

Rock Rage reported that Newsted ". . .has indeed left EchoBrain and will be replaced by friend Adam. Although Newsted will no longer be with the band, EchoBrain will still see their next album be released through his label, Chophouse Records."
