Your expectations may have been too high the first time around or you missed much of what the movie was saying. I remember that clearly for films such as 'Vertigo', 'Throw Momma From The Train', 'Jackie Brown' and some others.

There are also some movies that you liked when you first saw it, but it keeps getting better every other time you see it. 'Lord of The Rings: The Fellowship of The Ring' is one of those movies.

Not only is it a technical marvel, but it also took the the characters from Tolkien's books and made them characters you truly care about. It's one area that has been so lacking in this genre (sword and sorcery) in the past. The emphasis was always on special effects. The characters were an afterthought and as a result, always came across as wooden and boring. Here, despite the amazing special effects, the characters drive the movie. The emotional scene between Aragorn (Viggo Mortensen) and Boromir (Sean Bean) near the end of the movie is as gripping as any conventional drama. You gasp at the close calls, and silently cheer when the heroes survive another battle, because it's obvious that you care about what happens to these characters.

Because of that, there are subtleties you pick up on after seeing the film more than once, both in the scope of the entire movie and in the characters. In addition, the battle scenes and special effects as well as sweeping vistas of the New Zealand landscape (where it was filmed) are worth seeing multiple times.
