In A Mellow Tone
Published September 02, 2002
I put together a mix disc this weekend (is that the proper term? I used to make mix tapes back in the day, so I assume the same rules apply). My goal was to set a mellow-yet-romantic mood. Here's the playlist:
1. Ben Webster - Stardust
2. Getz/Gilberto - Corcovado
3. Norah Jones - Don't Know Why
4. Billie Holiday - Lover Man
5. Albinoni - Adagio
6. Chet Baker - My Funny Valentine
7. Jimmy Scott - All The Way
8. Jeff Buckley - Hallelujah
9. Israel Kamakawiwo'ole - Somewhere Over The Rainbow/Wonderful World
10. Jellyfish - Bedspring Kiss
11. kd lang - So In Love
12. Wynton Marsalis - Where Or When
13. Frank Sinatra - In The Wee Small Hours of the Morning
14. Ravel - Pavane pour une infante defunte
15. Ellis Marsalis - My Romance
16. Ella Fitzgerald - Ev'ry Time We Say Goodbye
When it comes to romance, you can't top the classics. Give me lots of Cole Porter, Rodgers & Hart, Sinatra, Ella, and Billie. And a 750-pound Hawaiian.
One song I regret not squeezing on: Bill Evans' exquisite version of When I Fall in Love off his Portrait in Jazz disc (the CD was at my office). And I tried, but no Miles Davis (the cuts were just too long). Sade was out, she just didn't seem to fit with the classic standards vibe.
What songs put you in a relaxed, amorous mood?
(p.s. In case you're wondering: mission accomplished.)
