At first, Branford Marsalis' new recording of John Coltrane's A Love Supreme (2004) seems foolhardy. Coltrane's work is embedded in a specific moment both of jazz history, the point where bebop gave way to the avant-garde, and in the life of Coltrane as he overcame his addiction and his demons.
My initial reaction to this CD was lukewarm...but sometimes you need to take a second listen, in a different atmosphere to really hear something. For me it was in my car...I turned the volume up and just drove and listened. I listened to the music, I listened to the words, I listened to the story.
