Annan throws down the Gauntlet!

“I think it is all right for one ambassador to come and push, but an ambassador always has to remember that there are 190 others who will have to be convinced – or a vast majority of them – for action to take place.” Kofi Annan, Secretary General of the United Nations, on the appointment of John Bolton by President Bush.

I believe the gauntlet has been thrown by this bold statement in the 1990s: John Bolton said, “Several floors of United Nations headquarters could be lopped off without being missed.”

I think Bush hopes to have Bolton bull United Nations into support when he takes Iran to the Security Council to seek punishment if Tehran moves forward with its nuclear program.

Bad enough we have occupation in Afghanistan and Iraq, now it seems he may be wanting to invade Iran as well.

We won’t invade Iran. Even fairly hawkish Bush supporters like me would not approve of such a move in large numbers.

Iran’s an interesting diplomatic example of how American unilateralism is playing out.

The US has found itself with a very limited role in managing Iran’s nuclear program diplomatically and has now taken a backseat to efforts by the European Union, who are now seen as the more influential and honest dealers in the region. The traditional US arguments for things like sanctions will increasingly fall on deaf ears within the UN and Europe has now taken it upon itself to become leaders in the Middle East due to Bush’s lack of willingness or ability to work on diplomatic approaches to proliferation and permanent solutions for peace.

    That is all.
