Amazon Kindle: Great Reading in the New Year

As a seminary student, I spent a great deal of time reading books and, of course, writing! I am literally surrounded by books. Books, books everywhere! Books overflowing off filled-to-the-brim bookshelves, books stacked up beside my bed, books piled up on the floor in my office, and I still have a year left of seminary. In this next year, I could easily gain eighty to hundred more books! Something had to give; I needed a better storage system! One day, in an ad, I saw an opportunity — Amazon’s Kindle Reader.

After a bit of research on what books were available on the Kindle, I was still not completely sold on the idea. The big selling point to me was that the books that were available were reduced in price, and the Kindle Reader is capable of holding 3500 of said books. Now, that kind of storage was really speaking to me, my friends!

Rarely asking for large-ticket items for Christmas, I carefully placed a cut-out of a Kindle advertisement on my husband’s computer keyboard (a sure-fire way to get something immediately noticed!) Not even a half hour later, the questions began to fly: “What kind of Kindle do you want, honey?” I learned that there were, of course, more options than I wanted to deal with at that moment. I relied on my husband to get me the details I needed to make the best decision, and another half hour later, I had the information I needed. There is a Kindle 3G Wi-Fi, or a Kindle Wi-Fi. I chose the latter, since I have a Wi-Fi network at home and one available at the seminary. I also could not imagine a desire to download a book while shopping at my local Target or Wal-Mart, or anywhere else that did not have free Wi-Fi, though I am certain there are people who might want the 3G feature. For me, it wasn’t necessary.

The deed was done then, and my Kindle Reader was on the way to me! I even received friendly email updates from Amazon, preparing me on how to receive my Kindle. It seemed as if I was adopting a new pet, instead of a handy electronic reading device! The package arrived on time, was neatly wrapped in Snowman wrapping paper and placed beneath the Christmas tree. Quite traditional, we are!

Well, Christmas arrived, as it always does. Wrapping paper hung from the ceiling fan, ribbons strung across the floor, as our two children attacked their pretty packages like ninja warriors. Finally, my Kindle, wrapped in Snowman paper, was placed in my lap by my son.

Overall, I am quite impressed with the Kindle Reader, and I particularly love the ink technology and no-glare screen, that really does mimic the feel of reading a “real” book page, rather than reading a book on a computer screen. I have already downloaded twenty books, five of which will be required for my upcoming semester! Already, my handy book storage device is paying off! It’s going to be a great year of reading, I think. Thanks to my Kindle!
