Guided imagery is a form of “self-mind control” which can be used to enhance improvements in your life in many ways. Far too often, we have a tendency to wallow in the negative and allow such images to erode our psyche. Doing this is certainly not the best use of one’s mental imagery. Instead of wasting energy on such processes, it would be a much better plan to use guided imagery as an effective means of enhanced visualization.
But is it accurate to refer to guided imagery as mere visualization? The truth here is there is more to guided imagery than just visualizing things. Rather, the process is far more expansive and can help yield far more improvements and enhancements than what you might initially assume possible. Then again, you likely do realize the tremendous benefits that guided imagery has the potential to deliver.
The Mind and How Imagination Works
The imagination truly is a powerful thing. Within the imagination, a great deal of powerful visualization techniques can be employed to create a new reality. No, that is not a call to create something metaphysical. Rather, you are visualizing attitudes, actions, and behaviors you wish to duplicate in life. Effective and imaginative visualization will enhance the likelihood such duplication is possible.
However, with guided imagery, you are extending the process far beyond just visualizing (seeing) things in your head. Rather, you are bringing all of your senses into the equation.
In other words, you do more than just visually imagine yourself as the star of your own movie when you imagine yourself in your own mind. Rather, you also tie in the sensations of taste, touch, smell, and hearing in order to truly immerse yourself in what it is you wish to visualize.
You truly do blur the lines between fantasy and reality when doing so. While not an easy process, this is still a beneficial one because the end result can be a much more beneficial change than would be the case if you only “saw” the changes you are interested in.
Making It Effective
How does guided imagery work and what is needed to attain results? There is no one single method. Since guided imagery is a process which exists in the mind, there is leeway present in terms of what can be done to effectively employ guided imagery for the desired purpose.
Both the mind and the body need to be completely relaxed before you seek to explore any adventures in guided imagery. If you are suffering from tension or your mind is chaotic, you won’t be able to create the imagery needed for the process to work. That is why meditation is employed as the basis for guided imagery. In a similar vein, you will need to gain control of your breathing. You may not need to do so immediately, but you will need to get your breathing under control at one point or another. Heavy breathing and hyperventilation does not exactly work well for those hoping to remain calm and concentrate on how their mind operates. As such, deep breathing exercises are a must to bring the respiratory system into concert with effective guided imagery techniques.
At this point, you will need to select a meditation process which can aid in facilitating the guided imagery. Most are familiar with seated meditation but lying meditation, walking meditation, and moving meditation can all be employed in an effective manner as well. One thing to be mindful of with any form of moving mediation, however, is that it can lead to distractions which make it too difficult to craft the overall imagery of the senses needed for the process to be effective.
Again, the mind is not the only thing engaged in the process of guided imagery. The physical body and even human emotions will be drawn into the mix, which can lead to amazing results that many would not assume possible. Because so many different components tie together in the process, distractions of any kind prove undermining.
The process of guided mediation is not a haphazard or random one and it needs to adhere to scores of principles in order to be effective. Simply imagining things in the mind does not deliver what is needed for this process to be effective…not by any stretch of (pardon the play on words) the imagination.
Within this notion is the expansion of the self beyond the commonly understood combination of the mind and the body, and the entry into an altered state. An altered state does not mean devolving into a primeval version of yourself. It simply means that as you become more in tune with your new mind/body connection you will discover your state will change in terms of how you perceive what is around you and what is in the mind. This opens the door for being more effective in crafting your guided imagery goals.
One key point here is that you need to be in control of the process from beginning to end. You do not want to fall into the trap of being a secondary player to your mind and your emotional power. You want to be the one that guides the imagery as opposed to the imagery guiding you. Being reactive in the endeavor will not allow you to ever maximize its true potential and value.
This does mean a lot of practice will be required in order for you to allow the process of guided imagery to work in a manner that is most effective. But the grand rewards it offers makes the entire venture well worth it.
If you want to see improvements in both your life and your core of being, success with guided imagery is definitely well worth pursuing.
