It's been a long year with a ton of rising stars, falling stars, and what were they thinking stars. Last year, I awarded everyone from Miley Cyrus to the Jonas Brothers, but times have changed. Here are the 2008 Teenage Star Awards.

The “It” Girl
Last year's winner: Miley Cyrus
Miley Cyrus is again the winner of the “It” Girl. Whether you like her or not, she's on the cover of almost every magazine and a lot of people never seem to get over her. She's famous and makes about $25 million a year. Pretty impressive for only being sixteen. In 2008, she released Breakout. The album was #1 on the U.S. Billboard 200 chart and sold about 371,000 copies in its first week. She also had the Vanity Fair scandal, in which she posed semi-nude. But watch out, Miley Cyrus: Selena Gomez (Wizards of Waverly Place) is right on your tail.

The “It” Guy
Last year's winner: Zac Efron
This year, the award goes to the Jonas Brothers, who released their 3rd album this year, A Little Bit Longer, and acted in Disney's Camp Rock with singer Demi Lovato. Girls pass out at their concerts. Most girls are so obsessed with them that if someone says they don't like them, they have just started a nuclear war.

Best Band
Last year's winner: Jonas Brothers
Jonas Brothers take this award away. They were the first group to sell more than 100,000 digital downloads for three consecutive singles (“Burnin' Up,” “Play My Music,” and “Pushin' Me Away.”) Their album A Little Bit Longer hit number one. Their summer tour was extremely successful. They swept the Teen Choice Awards in August with six awards: Choice Single/Love Song: “When You Look Me in The Eyes,” Choice Breakout Group, Choice Male Hottie (Vanessa Hudgens won Female), Choice Red Carpet Fashion Icon Male (Carrie Underwood won Female), and Choice Summer Song “Burnin’ Up.”

Best Female Singer
Last year's winner: Aly and AJ
What happened to Aly and AJ? I never hear about them. This year's winner is Taylor Swift, Nashville's country teen queen. She released Fearless this year. The album locked up #1 on the Billboard 200 Album Chart, selling 592,304 in its first week, its highest debut of any country artists in 2008. Plus, its the largest opening U.S. sales week in 2008 by a female artist in all genres of music.

Best Male Singer
Last year's winner: Corbin Bleu
After much thought, I do not believe there is any clear cut male teen idol of 2008. American Idol's David Archuleta was considered. His CD had hits such as “Crush” and “A Little Too Not Over You.”

Upcoming Female Star of 2009
Last year's winner: Selena Gomez
My prediction was so correct! This year's winner is Selena's best friend, Demi Lovato. Demi starred in Camp Rock with the Jonas Brothers and released the CD, Don't Forget. She is going to star in a new Disney show, Sonny Without a Chance. It began production in September. Shanae Grimes (90210, Degrassi) was also considered.

Upcoming Male Star of 2009
Last year's winner: Cody Linley and Jason Dolley
Last year there were two picks for Upcoming Male Star, and this year there is no winner.

Biggest Scandal
Last year's winner: Vanessa Hudgens' Nude Pics
Jamie Lynn Spears (Zoey 101) getting pregnant was a pretty big scandal. Once thought of as a good role model, parents went complaining that this “good Nickelodeon girl” was setting a bad example. Jamie was in the spotlight for a couple months, but like most scandals, this one died done. Of course, anything Miley Cyrus touches turns into a scandal.

Biggest “It's-Not-A-Big Deal” story
Last year's winner: Ashley Tisdale's Nose Job
There was a scandal surrounding Miley Cyrus when she was seen in a car without a seatbelt. Parents freaked out. Yeah, that's not a smart idea, but if your kid isn't going to wear a seatbelt because Miley didn't, that's your problem – not Miley's.

Biggest Screw-up
Last year's winner: Jamie Lynn Spears
Miley Cyrus wins for the whole Vanity Fair fiasco as well as other photos of her flashing her bra on the web. Photos were leaked multiple times. At least when this happened to Vanessa Hudgens, it didn't happen again.

Most Overrated
Last year's winner: High School Musical
It's so easy: Twilight. Girls not only believe they will marry Robert Pattinson (the star of the movie) but they also believe they will marry the fictional character, Edward Cullen. So many girls missed school because they went to the midnight show on a Thursday. Crazy.

Most Underrated
Last year's winner: Cast of Zoey 101
I would say Emily Osment, who stars with Miley Cyrus on Hannah Montana. It seems to me that everyone is always so focused on Miley, not Emily. She's just as good as Miley.

That's the Teenage Star Awards for 2008. Congrats to the winners, but who would you award?

About Maddy

How could David Archuleta not be declared the clear winner? Besides being a stellar vocalist, here are some hard facts about David’s great year:

David’s single “Crush” debuted at #2 on the Billboard Hot 100 in the week of August 21 with 166,000 copies sold in its first week, making it the highest debut for a song in 2008 and the highest debut for any song since Fall Out Boy’s “This Ain’t a Scene, It’s an Arms Race”. It also debuted at #1 on the Hot Digital Songs chart. To date, the single has sold 1.1 million copies. His debut album, released 11/11, has gone GOLD – 511K sold to date.

There are more accolades I could add, but a little research would have yielded the author the same results. So in our eyes – David Archuleta wins his category HANDS down.

  • Biggest Screw-up: If Jamie-Lynn won hers for her pregnancy, then this year’s should go to Bristol Palin who became a celebrity by virtue of her mother.

Miley’s “Vanity Fair” pics were the Biggest “It’s-Not-A-Big Deal” story. Apparently many repressed grown-ups didn’t know teenagers had backs. The people who saw the photo as sexual are the ones who have the issue.

  • I would also give a mention to Olympic medal-winning gymnast Nastia Liukin. She was an international star for a couple of weeks.
