The 2011 Emmy awards announced this morning

2011 Prime Time Emmy Nominations: Mildred Pierce, Mad Men the Big Winners

HBO’s mini-series Mildred Pierce has been honored with 21 prime time Emmy nominations, the most of this year’s crop of series, mini-series and TV movies. The five-part drama, starring Kate Winslet (Revolutionary Road) and Guy Pearce (Memento), is a remake of a 1945 movie saga, telling the story of a proud single mother trying to provide the best life possible for her daughter in the midst of the Great Depression and beyond.

The 63rd annual Prime Time Emmy Award nominations were announced this morning by Melissa McCarthy (Mike and Molly) and Joshua Jackson (Fringe). Mad Men, AMC’s drama set in the advertising world of the 1960s led the field of television series with 19 nominations, including best drama, lead dramatic actor, and lead dramatic actress.

Once again, non-network series dominated the nominations in nearly every major category, particularly among scripted dramas. There were not a lot of huge surprises among this year’s crop of nominees.

However, a very sweet moment came during the brief announcement ceremony when Melissa McCarthy heard her own name read as a nominee. Delighted and surprised—and a bit breathless—the first-time Emmy nominee quickly regained her composure to continue reading the nominations list.

The Emmys will be broadcast live on FOX, September 18. A complete list of Emmy nominees can be viewed on the official site.
